My wife and I will be in Hilton Head Oct 17-24 for a vacation, I’ll be doing some kayak fishing for reds and specks. The 10 day forecast shows 15-20 mph North winds for the first 4 days of the trip, that’s going to make for some difficult paddling!! I’ll do it, but I’d like to know what affect this might have on the fishing. I’ll be fishing early mornings while the wife is still sleeping so that puts me fishing falling/low water. I’ll hang around the mouths of creeks so I stay in water and don’t get stranded. Any advice is greatly appreciated, thanks!
I wouldn’t worry much about that weather forecast. Dang weatherman can’t even tell us what it’s going to do today.
It won’t have any affect on the fishing. They still have to eat every day and there is a lot of protected creeks where you can stay out of the wind.
I got your PM and will reply.

Amen Larry.
NWS and local TV weather guys called for north winds of 10-15 yesterday. I surf fished all afternoon and it was almost flat calm.

Well it’s good to know they’re as bad at predicting weather there as they are here in TN. I can’t tell you how many times I saw 70-80% chance of rain or high wind projections and went kayak fishing in clear skies and low winds or hunted anyway and the woods were calm and still, perfect. I sure hope they’re wrong on this too because I was hoping to have calm waters to spot tailing reds!
The weather is looking great for the weekend and next week. Fish are biting.

Yea it’s going to be bad. Luckily I’ll be fishing early mornings until a couple hours after sunrise so the winds should die down a bit during those hours. It will still be a difficult paddle from where I’m putting in to where I want to fish to be protected from the winds. Looks like that wind direction should make my paddle back to the ramp pretty easy. I might as well get in the main canals and troll some paddletails on my way back and see what I can pick up.
Actually - What is the water like in Mackay Creek from that CC Haigh ramp to Buzzard Island and the surrounding marshes around Pinckney Island? That’s where I plan to fish. Is that creek deep enough that it might be hazardous in a kayak in those winds. I’m athletic and my kayak is very stable, I often stand and fish with no issues, so I think physically making the paddle won’t be an issue unless that water is deep enough to make waves bigger than a kayak can handle. Moss Creek should keep me out of the wind, I may check that out instead. Shorter paddle from the ramp
I guess sight fishing is out of the question, nothing but muddy and choppy water…
