Put in at Sugar Hill yesterday morning and slammed the redbreast on beetle spins and crickets. My brother, visiting from VA, tried his luck for largemouth and hooked into his first spottail, 18 or 19", caught it on a white zoom fluke. We had a blast!
The Combahee is always a good time, it’s a beautiful river.
Good times. When you come out of the small creek into the combahee the bank just to your right is a good redfish hole, there are several other red redfish spots near there.
How is the dropoff at the ramp? I used to be able to put my old 21ft Skandia in at Sugar Hill. Someone told me the ramp is undercut now. Has it been fixed?
I used to do well with the Reds out in the main river. I never did much freshwater fishing there. Not sure if you can say, but I’ll ask anyway - did ya’ll catch the redbreast in Sugar Hill creek, or out on the main river banks?

I’m not sure about the boat ramp, I had no problems, but then again I was launching a 1448 flatbottom jon boat, so I was probably no where near the end of the ramp or where you would have had to be to launch your boat. Sorry I’m no help on that subject.
We were fishing out in the main river, we did well on the banks directly across from the creek and Twickenham plantation…
FishTaco, thanks for the info on the fish and the ramp. My Combahee buddy passed away a couple of years ago, so I have not been up that way lately.
Leadenwahboy I have seen and heard some monster gators in that area. We were fishing on the other side of a berm from a very vocal big gator a few years back. His deep growling was evidently intended to let me know I was in “his space”. Those growls from just a few yards away would make the hair stand up on the back of your neck! We decided to move!
Yeah I saw a couple bruisers up that way and another 1 or 2 small guys. I’m not great at estimating their size just by the seeing a head - I didn’t see any up on the banks - but I’d say the two big ones I saw were easily over 8 or 9’, conservatively.
Was also surprised to see 3 dolphins up that far - chasing reds i’m assuming.

No problem. Hope everyone stays safe with this storm coming in. I work for Beaufort County and I’m required to stay as emergency personnel. Looks like its shaping up to be a wild ride.
Newest tracks are pushing West. Florida will take a beating, but that will weaken the storm. Looks like a Cat 5, then 4, then 3 in Florida to a Cat 2 at the Ga/Fla border about midnight Monday. Then, up I-75 Tuesday in Georgia as a Cat 2. Then Cat 1 to the Geargoa/Alabama border about midnight Tuesday.
We will still have lots of trees down and roads blocked and no lights for a day or 2, but looks like the SC coast will be spared the devastation of a Cat 5 attack from the ocean at Savannah or Beaufort.
Things can always change for the worse. Let’s thank God, not “good luck” if we avoid a “bulldozer” like Hugo. Please pray for those in Florida who chose to stay.
