Sullivans 4/18

Took a personal day Monday and went out to Sullivans to see what I could find. The weather was perfect. Went out around 8AM, Station 16 1/2. Walked around to the bend where the current is not so overwhelming.

Caught a couple of whiting on shrimp, used 'em for cut bait. Then in an hour caught two, three foot shovel-nose sharks, whiting and two skates. I believe this is a Bullnose (cownose) skate, but I am used to rays so I cannot be sure.

On another note, IOP has been slow for me all Spring. I’m not a troughs expert like DParker, so that may contribute to the slow start.

Yep definitely a cownose. Good catch and sounds like a solid day!

I’ve never caught a cow nose in south carolina before, they look pretty cool.

cownose are rays too, they have deciduous spines like the other ones caught inshore, and occasionally have 2 of them this time of year before they shed last year’s. been poked once and it wasn’t as bad as the dasyatid varieties. big crushing plates for eating clams and the like, I can vouch that lipping them will leave you with sore fingers too.

That is one healthy Cownose! Nice!

Next trip to Sulivans try; stations 31st-29th, 26-1/2 to 24th or 21st-17th. Usually there are okay troughs/holes in these areas. The rest, in my experience, has alot of current, and dogs.
