Fished for about 3 hours this morning. The bite was moderate, not heavy but at least I caught a few. 2 were keepers. Forgot to take a pic at the beach so this one from when I was getting ready to clean them will have to do. The blue is 12", and the Whiting was just a hair smaller. She had eggs in her too, like some of the others that have been caught recently. At one point I had something enormous on the line, but my hook broke and I lost it. Let this serve as a PSA: don’t cheap out on the hooks!
What’s most exciting though is that there were baitfish EVERYWHERE! It looks like the season will be busting open real soon. Going again tomorrow, will post results if there are any.

Looks like a fun day! And a good dinner to follow.
This mimics my trip to IOP yesterday. Few keeper whiting holding eggs, blues, one lady fish and a big hit that bit through the steel leader. Bite really started to heat up an hour into the falling tide.
I Went Home Last Weekend (Central NC coast) and we caught 15 blues up to 18" and a dozen or so sea mullet (whiting) in a couple of hours on Saturday. Monday we dedicated a bit more time and caught just a handful of mullets, but managed about 25 blues 14-20".
For blues, to me the trick is get them on ice asap or don’t bother. They taste great but spoil quickly and if you have to make sure to get all the blood out when you clean them. I like to soak them in milk for about 20 minutes prior to cooking them too. Helps clear up the gaminess a bit.

Blues…most people say fresh is the only way. We fillet and freeze nearly every one we catch. We freeze them in water, and they’re never strong tasting. Also, I never give them any special preparation. Just bread them and fry em up.
The sea mullets…fry them in the round. Not much better swimming in the ocean.
