Arrived to my favorite spot on Sullivan’s around 7:15 this morning.
As soon as I arrived, I put a mud on one of my poles and immediately had a hit as I was rigging another pole. Pull it up and my mud had fallen prey and returned with only head in tow.
For the next hour, I fought a bit of wind and some slight current, but eventually was able to get my first hook up. I could tell by the amount of drag it was taken (drag was set tight enough that a nice red could take it) it had to be a nice fish.
Fought it for about a solid minute and as I started walking back towards the beach, I had seen it was a really nice flounder. (If I were to guess, it was easily 20"+) Just as I was getting it about 2ft from shore, the SOB just spit everything out, including the mud. I was a tad butt hurt as I literally counted to about 45 seconds before I set the hook (or at least I thought I set the hook).
Re-baited my line and fished for about an hour with nothing happening. By this time it was around 9:15. Started to lose a bit of hope and told myself, “couple more casts and I’ll call it a day.” Tossed the line to one of my favorite holes and slowly started working the line back in slowly, then THUMP. Started my count (again, about 45 seconds) and set the hook. This time I had him. Get it on shore and it was a 19" flounder. Finally, after a couple hours on the beach, I caught my first real keeper of the year. Packed up and headed home after that.
What could have turned out to be a 2-3 flounder day turned out one nice one and I couldn’t be more satisfied. I know what’s for lunch and dinner!
By the way, I used a Carolina rig with a single bead and a 1oz egg sinker fitted with a 3/0 kahle hook on 20lb flurocarbon. Bait of choice of course, was mud minnows.</font id=“size2”>
