Sullivans 7-18

Fished Sullivan’s Island outgoing tide today from 11am to 2pm. Fished with fresh shrimp from Wando Shrimp. Used cut pieces on 1/0 hooks on a simple double hook bottom rig with a 3oz pyramid sinker. Other then the wind and one quick shower the weather was perfect.

Things started out slow but when the fish started biting they kept on biting. I caught 4 whitening, 2 blue, 1 puffer, a decent size ray, and my first ladyfish.

Oh…I also caught a used bag of Snyder’s peanuts that you can see in the background.

Were you at Station 13? I was down there yesterday and got skunked.

Yeah I was. I talked to the guy fishing next to me. His name was David. He had two very nice size blues and one large ladyfish in the cooler. He caught those earlier in the morning. He was using cut bait. He said he caught even more blues that he had thrown back.

saving for bait? that ladyfish prob **** that cooler up

at least the peanuts were salted

heartofthesun, those ladyfish do have a tendency to umm… evacuate enthusiastically under duress!

Not sure why he kept it…he probably had a disappointing dinner last night.

I was on the right of the rocks which is probably why I got skunked. Had a lot of hits but only pulled in 2 puffers and a pin fish.

I saw a black dude catch a ladyfish one day it was about 6pounds. He landed it and asked us what it was, we said ladyfish and he asked us iff he could eat, we said I wouldn’t… he put it in the cooler anyways. Said he had to feed the family…
That lady almost looks like a bonefish in that pic.

i’d think the small bones and oily meat would make it rather like a shad… maybe you could bake it covered for a long time without drying it out too badly. they die pretty easily once they’re worn out/if dehooking is tough… so failing culinary pursuits, they do make decent cut bait!

not that anyone here has, but i hope to never bash another person for trying to eat (or enjoying to eat!) any fish. one day i will have the nerve to try a stingray/toadfish combo meal when i get skunked so badly i can’t come up with mullet or bluefish for the smoker

…if it walks on all fours, swims or flies…

I’ve tried a lot of stuff, sometimes it stunk and sometimes I’ve been plesently suprised. Toadfish are ugly, but so are monkfish, ling, orange ruffy, etc. Heck, flounder isn’t that pretty, but its one of my favorites.

gills…you actually try a toadfish??? not bashing if ya did just wondering.

No, that’s one that I haven’t. Doesn’t look like it has much meat on it. Almost all head. I was just agreeing with Barbawang. There are some pretty ugly fish out there that taste pretty good.

the one ill confess to trying is a gar. figured since its a predator fish like a walleye or a pike it would be ok and that time i was right. dont get me wrong walleye is much better, but deep fried or cooked like poor mans lobster it really wasnt bad at all…just dulled my knife like crazy cleaning it. not planning on trying the toadfish though!

doesnt ladyfish, bonefish and tarpon just turn to mush when cooked? only eaten in dips or fishcakes?

Mullet is good. Next ray I catch that I’m not afraid to put in the boat imma eat, I’ve been wanting to. Just to say I did!

Friends, toadfish is good eating. Just fillet the tail and cook it like a catfish fillet. It’s wonderful white meat, about the consistency of halibut. Almost hate to tell people, but most are so grossed out by his looks, the little toadfish will get thrown back most of the time.

I think I will keep throwing 'em back for you to catch and eat
