Arrived on Sullivan’s at 5am with only a dozen muds and hopes of them lasting long enough to find mullet running. From 5ish to almost 6:00 it was pretty slow. Muds weren’t giving us much luck besides some crabs tearing up the muds and some toads. As we were down to our last few remaining muds, the mullet finally arrived.
Ten minutes after switching to mullet, my buddy hooks into a huge flounder. Never was able to get a full look at it, but the way his rod was bent, it could have easily slumped my 24" from two days previous. Unfortunately, it went on a nice run after seeing us and just bite right through the fluoro. You could tell it had been gut hooked and the line just sliced off in it’s teeth.
With his head held high, he tied on a new line and got back out there. About 5 minutes later, he lands a beauty of a trout at 21".
The bite was slow after that until the turning of the tide. Threw my line in a honey hole and put rod in holder as I went looking for more bait. Look over at my rod and it slumps over. Ran down to get it and it had spit out the mullet. Started slow retrieving and it went for and missed the mullet again. Pull it in and the mullet was mangled. Hook a new one on and throw to the same spot and set my drag really loose, so it could take line easily if need be. I make about 10 steps away from the pole in the holder and my drag starts moving. I set it and I was hooked into to. Fought for about 20 seconds and boom. Chewed through the line. Tied a new line on and went back to the same spot, with new rig and new mullet in tow. This time when I threw back into the hole, I kept the pole in my hand and slow retrieved it. Twenty seconds it, that thump again and my line started moving. Flipped the bail to let it take a little line, flipped back over, and set the hook. This time it was hooked good. Fought it for about a minute max and pull in another beautiful flounder at 22".
Man, the flounder fishing has been on fire this year. I also caught two more flounder at 17" and gave them to a family
