Fished from 3-7 was mostly low tide with lots of freighters passing and heavy wind blowing directly at beach, so wind and waves kind of made it hard to feel the bites. I caught 2 pin fish, a spot, 2 whiting, 2 trout and a sea robin. I was fishing dead in front of the fort, missed 3 other trouts that shook off. Caught the large trout about 17-18 inches on the shark/ big red line with a 100g spider weight and I never new it was on until I reeled it in so had to keep the big trout because it was going to die anyways. I was surprised it couldn’t budge the weight. Now that was the good time for the bad part of the trip, as I am fishing about 30 ft from my rod in the sand spike a family comes up and the kid gets real close to my rod like arms reach I look away for maybe 10 seconds real time and my rod and rod holder are in the water. It takes me nearly pulling my back out to pull my rod holders out, I put them deep and keep my drag really loose so it definitely wasn’t a fish that pulled it in. I get my other shark line and snagged it as the family is watching and laughing a dirty laugh. Then as I’m reeling in my other rod with the one that I snagged on it which comes in and there’s not a mark on the bait, the spider weight was still hooked in the sand and the rod was about 10 ft off the bank, I still lost a rod holder and it probably ruined my reel. The kid then goes to throw my other rod holder and the mom then notices I am watching this time and halfheartedly says put it down. Mean while his father and brother are all in my stuff, looking like thief’s on a mission so I have to quit fishing and stand guard in this circle of trash. The mom faked like she cared but could tell they taught the little kid (about 12) his behavior and could careless. I mean the whole family was laughing and smirking as I had to save my rod from the water and then they were trying to ransack my personal spot which was tucked out the way, no reason to go over there unless it was your stuff. Out of respect for my self I couldn’t sa
Did you have a cart with ya? I was fishing at station 16 in that time frame
I was tracking until about halfway through your post. Now exactly what happened?

I do better down by 16, but stories like this really upset me. I would have wanted to tell them off a bit, but I have had to deal with some tacky people too and try to keep my cool as well. Also if you were in front of the fort what the heck were they doing letting their kid in the water? Where you by the whirlpool (not really a whirlpool, but we called it that as kids because of the crazy currents)?
Funny semi related true story. I was fishing 18 early one morning when this group of teenage girls comes to where I’m fishing. Plenty of empty beach all around me, they decide to wade/swim near me. Ordinarily I go out of my way to be considerate of swimmers, but we were literally the only ones there and they decide to swim around my lines. I say to heck with it and cast a double rig. One of the shrimps comes off and flies off to the side and hits one of the girls. Funniest thing I ever saw. Felt bad, but not that bad. Some people just can’t learn.
This brings up a question I’ve thought about, how close do swimmers and waders cause a problems with the fish?

They don’t seem to cause much problem at all in my observation, but as a responsible sportsman you HAVE TO consider their safety even if they don’t. The last thing you want to do is accidentally hook someone.
Yeah by the whirl pool type current but they weren’t swimming just walking down the beach and decided to throw my rod in the water. The reel is likely ruined I cleaned it and got about half a shot glass of sand out of it and it feels the same or worse.

If you have the time you’ll have to take it completely apart, de-grease it, wash it, and re-grease it. If you don’t take it by HPT. Filling a reel with sand doesn’t ruin it but it does require a lot of cleaning. Don’t use it while it’s sandy.

Your a better man then me. Fist would have flown. I don’t tolerate stupidity.
At the end of the day you did the right thing, you would have had to of fought the whole family and mom would have stuck a knife in your back while you were trying to beat some sense into her husband, or you would gotten arrested and lost a whole lot more. Take reel to haddrels and get serviced I think its 30$. Could of escalated very quick and been a serious problem when dad got back to car, or stolen your bait knife. It just wasnt worth it as hard as it may have been to walk away you keep in mind you did the right thing.
I do agree. It would have been extremely hard for not to have said or done anything. Try to get these people on camera and bring it up to authorities is really the only thing that could be done. Other than your run in with inbreds it sounds like a good day of fishing.
