Sullivan's and folly 5/30

Had this beautiful day off so I decided to spend it fishing all morning and afternoon. Started in front of Ft. Moultrie a little after 7am/low tide. Only catches there were two decent whiting. Spent most of my time toying with my new reel and trying to decide if I liked the braid that I had spun on it (first time with braid). Around 10 I took the quick drive up to Breach’s Inlet and fished at the circular house. Caught four whiting, one 13 inch black drum right at the rocks, and a ray that was a little over two and a half feet. As I was leaving I found a huge ray dead on the beach that still had a rig in its mouth. Looked like it was a relatively fresh catch so I asked some of the people that were lounging about if they had seen anyone catch it. Unfortunately, nobody knew anything. I really wanted to give someone a swift kick in the butt. After a quick lunch I went out to north Folly. I got there right after high tide at 1pm and fished until a little after 3. Caught one bonnet head (anybody else catch these in the surf?) that was right at 2 feet, and an ungodly amount of pup sharks. Caught everything on a Carolina rig with either cut or finger mullet. Hope y’all enjoy!

did better than me…was that you in the kayak right near the parking area? not suprised you got a ton of pup sharks and yes bonnetheads can def be caught from the surf.

Nope. I was down the beach a bit to the right of the parking area right beside a groin. I was leaving to go to Breach’s when that kayaker came in. He said he caught some small stuff, couple of reds. Were you the guy on the point with the beached kayak and rods?

yup that was me. tried IOP 1st but even a 20oz weight got tossed sideways to the shore rather than sitting just past the breakers. paddled out half a stingray on the heavy rod, casted half a crab on another, and shrimp with a bait rod. i was hoping a red, black drum, or bonnethead was swimming around the rocks or a blacktip or lemon swimming around the harbor but today just wasnt my day…all i got was a couple taps on the bait rod.

I haven’t had any luck at Moultrie this summer except with bait fish. Seems like everyone else is catching monsters besides us two, ha. Even saw two monster reds washed up there last Tuesday.

ha it happens! i got a 4ish foot finetooth and a missed take on a small stingray there last year along with countless whiting and toadfish but so far this year i only have a few whiting and undersized sheephead to my name from the fort area.

a dead ray on the beach!!!?! what a waste of perfectly good bait!

fished near breach today and there was a 13inch black drum and bluefish washed up in the rocks

My daughter pulled in her first fish, a flounder around 12" caught a few whiting and rays also

Nice to see more people are catching there. Maybe things are finally heating up.

i tried today and saw a few what looked like bonnetheads (couldnt see the head just fins sticking up) along some sand humps but they didnt wanna play. my excitement for the day was flipper nearly landing inside my kayak.
