got out to the beach around 8 this morning and had a good time w/ my new neighbor zach. awesome dude. glad he bought the house next to ours
zach caught a nice keeper sized whiting on his first cast! i thought… oh snap it’s on now!.. not so much… slow going for a bit then ended up putting another whiting in the cooler.
ended up moving about 50 ft up the beach when i hooked into something big… oh man is this going to be my first bull-red?! fought the beast on my very light tackle outfit (was targeting whiting with cut shrimp). pulled a ton of drag on me but i was patient and subdued em. turned out to be a nice size bonnethead in 20 pound range i would estimate. i was stoked
ended up releasing him as was not aware of what the size limit was at the time. got a good laugh when we pulled him up on the beach somebodies black lab came running out of nowhere and started biting the shark [:0] lol! the dog managed not to get bitten (thankfully). we snapped a few pics on zach’s phone (hope to post later) and released em healthy back into the atlantic.
awesome fight on 14 pound test for sure. fantastic morning!
had fried whiting, potatoes, and green beans for lunch. good times
photos were from his phone. got em on facebook but yet to figure out how to post em here. will mess around in a bit
wish i knew there was no size limit on bonnetheads @ the time… but no shame in releasing a healthy one either. yet to keep a shark… not sure how i would feel about bleeding one out on the beach w/tourists around…
went out and tried a couple spots tonight. started around station 30 and caught a baby sharpnose and found stuckonland walking around. fished there about 2 hours and was constantly followed by everyone’s friend. perhaps i could train it to watch my rod and squack when something hits my line???
went to a different spot after a while and caught a small BSB, a small whiting, then on the rod with a stingray on it RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRIP!!! i missed the first hit and felt big and left quite a bite mark, but got a second hit not quite as big and landed this. 43" and correct me if im wrong since im not too experienced with many different kinds of sharks but that a dusky shark? just like my big redfish i took great care not to reveal where exactly on sullivans island i got it
he got a baby sharpnose off of me! i reeled in my line to check bait and it must have been on there a while because it was belly up when i landed it and was snatched up in seconds when i tossed it in the water.
How do you guys target those sharks?
Do you just lob a big ol’ mullet out there and hope for the best. I have fished Sullivan’s a few times and caught some flounder, but no sharks.
“In every species of fish I’ve angled for, it is the ones that have got away that thrill me the most, the ones that keep fresh in my memory. So I say it is good to lose fish. If we didn’t, much of the thrill of angling would be gone.” Ray Bergman
thats my 1st shark off the surf except folly pier so im definately no expert but yup pretty much…all i did was walk out chest deep and launch it…except that was on a stingray.
