sullivans island 9/10 am

set my alarm for 515am to be on the surf by 7am for sunrise and woke up to the sound of a lawn mower at 815. low tide was around 930 and it takes me about 40 minutes to get to SI so i went anyways. stopped at breach inlet to net some mullet and got a few small ones and one foot long. got to the beach, walked around, and found a place the waves were breaking a bit differently so i decided to try there. made a 6 foot 124lb leader with a 16/0 circle hook and rigged up the big mullet. no weight i just walked out waist deep, launched it, and let it swim free. i get to rigging another rod and i see the line tight from the mullet wanting to swim farther out so i let it have more line then shut the bail. i get back to my other rod and hear the mullet rod screaming and bent over even with the sand. the rod then pops out of the holder but i got to it in time. went to shut the bait clicker on my surf spinning reel but saw that idiot me forgot to lift the lever so it could take line much easier. even with the drag set heavy it was stripping it like the bait clicker was open and not slowing down so all i could really do was hold on. freelined the mullet in hopes of shark or tarpon cruising a sandbar (i know im daydreaming with tarpon lol) but never saw a silver torpedo jump out of the water and felt like a shark so i figured thats what it was. 15-20 minutes and an audience on 5 or 6 locals later i pull up my personal best 5 foot blacktip. lesson learned: if you sleep through the alarm…go anyways!!!

whats left of my now worthless rod holder

ok,ok, I’m done with the Folly surf, I’m goin to SI.

ive still had plenty of hits from sharks at folly too…just happened to go 1 for 1 2day haha.

Nice catch, last week when I went I had no luck. That thing put a hurting on your sandspike but it’s worth it when you land something like that. Least you can fix it and go for another one.

Nice catch! Get you some pvc from the hardware store for your rod holders. I use 1 1/2 inch and get 4 out of a 10ft tube.

that rod holder will prove right any fish story i ever tell in the future

Dude that’s awesome!!!

nice catch

Awesome sauce. Where were you on SI? ive new to this area and only know about the place behind the fort.

I made me some rod holders out of electrical rigid pvc (1 1-4") and those metal green fence posts, and some metal straps. Works great.

nice catch, pretty envious haha. Maybe I will be fishing in a little bit today.

Awesome Bro!

didnt do much of anything different than what people say a million times over when surf fishing for sharks to find it. fishing where the waves are breaking even i catch a few whiting and nothing else. looking for a spot the waves are obviously breaking differently whether that be a sandbar, dropoff, current change, or anything else and the line gets whacked very quickly. only thing different i did was freeline the mullet instead of try to weigh it down in current.

Use bolts instead of rivets.

it was a holder i bought at haddrells…not one i made

great catch!
