Went to sullys island yesturday 9/16 and the current was insane and the sea grass made it unfishable so we packed up and headed to folly beach. We went to the far north end of the beach where it dead ends. Had lots of missed bites and hooked up to one 15inch redfish.
Went to sullys in morning 9/17for whiting still crazzy currents managed to catch a few baits. Packed up and went back to the same folly beach spot. The current was so strong i couldnt even keep an 8oz spider weight to stay in place. Everything i threw got carried down the beach quickly. We were really pissed me and my wife only get the chance to fish the weekends together and its allways strong currents on the weekends for some reason maybe its Jose off the coast. Anyway our fishing moral is at an alltime low right now we are pretty bummed worst day we have had fishing ever.
Same for me Stevo this weekend. Saturday IOP and Sunday Kiawah. Dirty water and super strong currents.
Only managed a few small whiting, 1 nice trout and a little puppy red drum.
Jarvice thanks for that link but idk what i am looking for in determining current down the beach. From what i can see i can only read wave height. I have fished in big waves that dont take my baits down the beach and i have fished in tiny waves that rocket my baits down the beach. I use to fish near wrightsville beach and Myrtle beach and never had this problem unless there was a hurricane coming. Here its almost a daily basis thing.
And yes Jack taylor i was wondering if i was the only one having problems out there. We definitely tried to hard yesturday thats for sure
You are doing good Stevo. Some day’s the current will be to much and not allot we can do about it. If an 8ou spider isn’t holding a couple things that will help are don’t cast too far and fish up front with a tight line. The less line out will help because of less resistance. Braid line has a thin diamiter and that can help too. Make sure bait is not big as that can get caught by current as well. Think strip bait not chunk bait on these day’s. If the forecast gets to 20 and above getting bait to hold becomes an issue. Where you fish on the beach also has an impact if the area has to much of a rip. If it’s ripping on an inlet or such just a short walk down the beach can help to find a spot that has less current… You are doing good and fishing allot and that is important. You grow with every trip. We have had a bunch of rain and storms and what happens directly after them as Jack said above is it will “dirty the water up” with all the run off rain it will carry out mud grass etc. Some area’s can pose more of a problem during these conditions such as bordering a inlet. Extreme high tides can also pick up allot of grass and muck off of land and pull it out. Over the next number of weeks you want to get out and fish allot. We are close to prime time for reds in the surf and as soon as the water cools a bit it will be the best opportunity of the year to get on them. A standard rule of thumb that I go by is Labor Day to Thanksgiving. Give or take a couple of weeks on either end. Some of the best day’s for me involved a single fish that was worked hard for. Don’t get so hung up on numbers and as veterans such as Jack will tell you the gage of a successful day is not how many fish you caught, but did you enjoy your time out with friends and family on the water. Love your reports, thank you:smiley:
I also use surf-forecast.com, not 100% accurate espeacially long term forecast but pretty close. Wind direction/speed plays a huge roll in the pull. North-north east winds cause bad pull but help “form” the best beach.
Amen to that Pete. Surf fishing is like surfing. It’s more like a spiritual experience for me.
Anyway Stevo, the higher tides, NE winds and the hurricane offshore caused the strong current the past few days.I see that later in the week and through next weekend the tides look like 5.5-6.0. Now if we don’t have another storm offshore and NE winds, the current should be less. Sometimes when the current is too strong, I’ll take my 8ft. rig and wade out with my back to the current and fish basically parallel to the beach holding just the 1 rod. Beats fighting that current!
Anyway, like Runbabyrun said, the next 2 months or so can be the best of the year, so catch 'em up and have fun !
Thanks for all the input my fishing spirits are back up and im ready to go back out. Next time we have strong currents im going to just work 1 rod and use strip bait and cast closer in. Hopefully going back out wednessday. And i hope this hurricane maria stays south and leaves us alone!
Strong currents to me means big bait and spider weights. I fished Friday got worked by waves but there was no current. The bite was hot at mid tide coming in.

Catch any nine footers bro?
