Sullivans Island - Memorial Day

Anyone know who this idiot is? Shark fishing in broad day light on a crowded beach on the biggest tourist vacation day of the year? His brains are clearly in his ass…

Not a good idea by any stretch but at least the news didn’t portray it negatively.

Flip side, maybe he’s one of the tourists enjoying the opportunity to surf fish in Charleston while on vacation?

“It was just amazing to see a shark that size, and also how no one returned to the water.”

The second part of her statement is the most condemning. This kind of crap will put this sport on the fast track to getting banned. I’m still amazed at the lack of judgement.

I can tell where he is fishing on Sullivan’s from that picture. He’s on the stretch of beach facing out into the harbor and close to the grillage. That stretch is usually pretty secluded and nobody swims there anyways.

The sharks are there whether you are fishing or not…

It’s true that the sharks are there all the time, but as the guys I’ve fished with since the 80’s have always said… “it’s only going to take one idiot to ruin it for the rest of us”. Thus, our club has always fished beaches at night. Great fishing, no swimmers (usually), and less other greenhorn sharking bozos to deal with.

It may be the guy’s only chance to shark fish all year. The article says it’s at station 30 but that’s wrong since it’s clearly on the other side of the island. On that end of the island there’s a steep drop off and bad currents so few people wander out to where baits are. Heck this was a weak tide this weekend and somebody still drown at the safest place on the island ~station 23.

Not everyone can fish at night and it’s more dangerous to fish at night too. Give the guy a break. Not everyone has a fishing crew and short drive to night fish when they get a minute.

I hope he comes back again and catches 100 more sharks to spook a few more people out the water. Fishermen should have just as much access to the beach as everyone else. We shouldn’t be hiding is the corners as much as we do now. Your much more likely to get crushed by a kite boarder than caught by a hook.

I want to catch them all

Giving benifit of the dought, maybe he was not shark fishing? Maybe the guy was just fishing? I NEVER shark fish on purpose, but I do catch sharks. I’ve caught 5 foot (TL) Sandbars on a 1" chunks of cut bait fishing for Reds. But I will agree with blueline about getting Shark fishing banned, one well placed complaint from the right person, to the right people…well just ask the folks in the Myrtle beach area. This time of year I rarely use cut bait.

Your point is correct but your thinking is wrong. As has already been mentioned, one complaint from the right person to the right person and all surf fishing will be banned from populated beaches. It has happened all over the coast and it WILL happen here if people like this continue to use lack of judgement and bring in sharks like this in front of so many tourists. Not to mention the danger he put others who were swimming around there in. One run from a fish that size could send some one to the ER if they were to get caught by the line. Don’t get me wrong, I think fishermen have every right to the beach just as anyone else, but you must know how the system works if you want to keep the little fishing rights we have. Be smart, use your head, and make decisions that show the public the positive sides of fishing and we together can prolong the rights we still currently possess.

Great, so we’ll just give credit to an idiot tourist for Sullivan’s Island passing an ordinance preventing anyone from fishing. There is still plenty of opportunity to fish when the sun goes down and the other tourists are off hitting the Noisy Oyster or Fleets Landing for supper.

Are you implying that people should surf fish only after dusk during the summer months? We’ve already established he wasn’t fishing an area with many swimmers so why is he an idiot? I actually prefer shark fishing in the day because I love seeing the amazing acrobatics blacktips display. If you’re only shark fishing at night you’re missing part of the experience.
