Sullys 8/28

Fished the falling with fm good conditions water clarity and low water. Only 1short flounder to show for it. Surprisingly slow. Thought the cooler mornings would have had em chewing. Plenty of bait moving though. Think I may get up early and throw topwater Friday. Anyone been having any luck near the inlets or rocks on top lately???

Coming off a new moon, fishing will be a little slower than normal. Peak times will be short. I will be hittin’em hard this weekend.

Yeah I don’t put too much faith in solunar periods for the average surf fish. Big reds and sharks yeah but whiting trout and flounder not so much. I’m thinking it was more a mod afternoon sun and heat kinda thing but whatever. Sometimes you do the right things at the right times and it just doesn’t pan out.

I wouldn’t dismiss the solunar times so quickly. I’ve been doing this fishing thing a while now. And I would almost put money on its accuracy. This is the table I’ve used for about 15 years.

So you swear by that chart, I will have to try it out as I trust your judgement.

As a die hard largemouth fisherman, I have had bad days and checked the chart and it showed it was a bad day and vice versa. Now you ask, “What about salwater?” Well what controls the tides? Now sure many other factors control fish patterns, you now the ones, water temp, barometer, time of year, yada-yada. But I belive the moons phase and it’s postion plays a very big role in how fish and game move and feed. And I don’t have any money, so I realy could’nt bet.

Boy, I wish I could use such things to pick and choose when to go fishing. The way my life is now I go when I can go and I don’t when I can’t.

Like mikeyloo - between work, family, kids, etc I usually just go fishing when I don’t have something else I have to do. But, I also look at tide tables and solunar charts to see what I might expect. I rarely follow up after fishing to see if the prediction was correct - so no proof it works. Thought I might share the site I use since it also includes tide information as well.

Best time to go is definitely when you can. in yesterday’s case I actually was there during the peak feeding time. Just on a week moon day. I would fully expect to have caught nothin had I been there on the wrong part of the tide or if the water was all mucked up.

I do believe solunar tables are a factor just secondary to other factors most if the time for the average surf/inshore fish. The idea that fish just don’t feed actively during week moon phases or in minor feeding times is questionable to me because often those major times will be trumped by things like sunrise/set or proper tide level for a particular location. The one flat fish I caught yesterday ate 1 finger mullet before I got him with a 2nd which it spot up on the beach, 5minutes later. At least that ONE fish was actively feeding.

Okay, so we just got back from the beach a little while ago. Looking at graceandhayes linked website, It is pretty much right on with the action. First line in was about 6:15. Didn’t even have time to get second rod set up and fish on. For the next 45mins. or so, caught maybe 12 small whiting, couple rays and had a few blue fish hit. Rigged the big rod up with a chunk of whiting, nothing till about 8:30, landed a 2’ Sharpnose. Maybe there is somthing to it. Maybe not. Like some said I’m gonna go every chance I can. Fortunately for me it is quite often. Will be on the beach at 6:00am Sat.
