Surf 1/5

What beach do you usually surf fish. Are you a Folly or IOP guy.

Not Folly.

ā€œIf it were catching, Everyone would be good at it.ā€

Shrimp on a 2 drop rig? How much weight?

Do you just cast as far as you can or do you fish the troughs? Iā€™ve never had luck in the troughs, most of the time when I get fish in the surf, Iā€™m just letting her fly straight out.

Fresh shrimp always, double drop, 2-4oz., most of the time 3oz. Most all the holes (troughs) I fish are best around low tide. Iā€™ve never had much luck in high troughs. Plus they tend to change at every turn. Low tide troughs are pretty much there all the time. Only thing that seems to change is the depth. If you find a cut or break in the secondary sand bar, you will need more bait! Also I wonā€™t spend to much time in one spot with no bite, I will move, usually south maybe half a block. As for casting, with 15lb mono I ā€œcouldā€(but donā€™t have to) cast a 3oz. rig + bait 60-80 yards? Most the time I can reach my spots under hand. Having said that, I dont go out at high tide, unless we are just making a day at the beach. But for sure the surf season is winding down, but you can still go find your spots and go back in the spring.

Remember ā€œFishingā€ is ALWAYS good. ā€œCatchingā€ can be a TRICK.

Dparker, hereā€™s a dumb question: define ā€˜freshā€™ shrimp? Iā€™ve used frozen and either the fish werenā€™t finding it or they didnā€™t like it. Usually end up with rays or whiting.
The reds I get in the surf usually come on live mullet.

bonecrusher, I go to the seafood market and buy fresh, (never frozen) medium shrimp. Local is great. Sometimes Iā€™ll buy a few pounds and take some home for dinner. What seems to work best for me is put maybe 1/3lb. in a sandwich size zipper bag. Lay it flat in the freezer late night before or early A.M. before for a ā€œsoftā€ freeze. I take minimum 1lb. (3 bags). 1/2 a shrimp per hook. As for the rays, you are probably not getting in the troughs or casting over it. You want to be inside the secondary sand bar. My opinion.

dparker677, You said you fish low tide but is it the outging or incoming side of low? I usually start at high & fish as it goes out just to help keep the bait going out but I have not had any luck at all the past couple of years in the surf doing that.

So, if you're standing where the audience is, where is the target area for your cast? Also, as the tide comes in and you have to move up the beach, are you going to be putting baits in this second trough (foreground of your photo)? It looks like a pretty significant drop. After the beach is covered between those two spots, how long do you think until the predators move into that second trough or do you think they're coming in through the little cuts (creeks) that run perpendicular to the ocean and then just cruising the troughs parallel to the ocean? Sorry for all the questions but you've got a lot of good info to share. I'd love to surf fish tomorrow but the boss (wife) might have something to say about that.
