First off this post is not for a local beach. I was in North Myrtle this past weekend working on the beach house. But I live in Charleston and though I would share my trip. I had not fished this spot in ten years or so, walked down at low tide to scout for holes…and the spot is still good. First hour was slow, a few baby Blues, then the Whiting turned on. Caught maybe 20-30, was hard to keep up with both rods, some Blue fish, Spot and Croaker mixed in. And my very first ever Weakfish!!! Pretty nice one as well. Was a very beatiful day. And the Weakfish made it speacial. Fished maybe 4 hours. Fresh shrimp and cut Blue fish.
Thanks for sharing. I grew up surf fishing a couple times a year and its what I love most. I’ve always held my rod in order to catch whiting and spots. Can you catch them while in the holder? Do you use circle hooks? I’ve always used size 4 long shank hooks. Wondering what setup others use.

I try to fish 2-3 time’s a week. It must be an addiction. This time of year I use Eagle Claw plain shank j-hooks in #4 and #2. No circles in the surf. And heck yeah you can catch Whiting from a holder. I don’t hold the rod. Most fish will hook themselves on a tight line. And I rarely ever deep hook.
I think I’m going in the morning. What time do you recommend? Low tide is around 530am. I’m going to County Park area on Folly. Any recommendations. Would love to eat fish for dinner tomorrow night

Honestly, I would be on the beach as soon as I could see. You should be able to still spot the troughs. The Whiting bite should be good. I’m out of town again this weekend, will be on the beach monday afternoon for sure. And skip the minnows and nasty finger mullet and get some shrimp. Fresh medium shrimp, like you would eat. Freeze them a few hours untill firm so they are easier to cut. Right now, using #4 hooks, I cut mine into thirds, shell/tail on.
Here’s what I use, right now. That’s a #2 hook.
Thanks dparker. Will post a report later.

I’ve always fished shrimp with shell on, but read somewhere to take the shell off for better results. Anyone have any thoughts/experience about the difference?
Thanks.
Seems the shell helps the shrimp stay on the hook much better. Live shrimp have the shell on?

quote:I've always been taught to use shrimp with shell off. Caught everything from whiting, weakfish, shark, black drum, & trout in the surf like that. I've hardly had a problem with shrimp falling off the hook. I've never used shell on. It's all preference though I feel.
