I’ve been fishing beaches for over 50 years now.I’ve fished beaches from Cape Cod to South Carolina and it seems that fisherman fishing beaches always end up on the crappy end of the stick. We’ve had battles with boats, surfers and swimmers.I was at the beach today.I was basically the only one fishing and the beach was pretty much vacant. Was fishing the same spot for at least 4 hours, relaxing, sitting in my chair.I see a lone swimmer at least a quarter to a half mile away.Long story short, she swims pretty much into my line.I yell to her that there is a line in the water next to her.Next thing I know she’s calling me an “asshole” and tells me that I should move. What are your thoughts?
When something similar happens to me I say " Hey, I’m in this one spot. You got the whole beach to swim/surf/float in!"
dito mikey
I wave at them before they get on my lines - usually - OK thanks - didn’t see them - my bad.
Next:
I always say - “hey you’re gonna get a hook in you - my lines are out there.” That normally works for me.
You just can’t argue with an idiot like that.

i say- set the hook- they’ll get the message.
OUR GOVERNMENT HAS BECOME THE ENEMY OF FREEDOM.
i always point them east, if that doesnt work toss the lead at them.
I pay 10 to fish and they pay nothing to swim< whats the problem?
Last year on Labor Day Weekend a lifeguard told me in his broken English about mid morning that I had to move from the spot I had been in since first light. I moved down the beach and the swimmers followed. Then a young man came up on a 4 wheeler and told me I had to stop fishing because swimmers were complaining that I was drawing sharks. In NMB if someone complains to the lifeguard you will be told you have to quit fishing there or a citation can be issued. I’d like to see someone call their bluff and fish standing in the surf. If they try to write a ticket call DNR to see who has jurisdiction in the water.
I’d rather fish than eat.

happens to all of us! every time i try the north end of sullivans ill be the only one there first thing in the morning and even though the entire beach is open, paddleboarders and windsurfers put in right by my lines even though i point out the obvious 10 foot surf rods stuck in the sand. swimmers definately follow and ill give a respectful warning and most of the time theyll stay clear, but the 1 guy that tried cussing me out moved quickly when i placed a sinker perfectly 2 feet from em there has been ONE INSTANCE where people kayaking right along the beach actually saw me, took the kayak out, went around me, and put in on my other side. i was completely shocked and even stopped em to thank em for that one!!!
Most of the offending people arent even from here, just Turons. I pay my taxes in this state, buy a license to fish from the beach. If I am there first light, I’m not moving!! Some old lady challanged me once on IOP. I told her to call the cops. She did. She lied and said I was chumming!!! Cop asked me if I was chumming, I said of course not!! Told him check my cooler, he said that wont be neccessary and wished me luck. He told the lady I was there before her and had just as much right to be there as she did.
Another lady saw me unloading gear from my truck one early evening for an all night fishing. She said to me, “if your out here fishing for sharks while my grand children are swiming I will call the cops” My responce was, “if you let your grandchildren swim at night, you’re an idiot!!”
People are stupid!!! Sharks are out there wether or not anyone is fishing!! If you dont know the ocean environment, stay your ass on the dunes!!
WATER FRONT DINING AT IT’S FINEST!
THE OCEAN IS NOT YOUR SWIMMING POOL!!!

That’s why I love fishing the far end of Sullivans where swimming is prohibited. Right past Station 16! Makes for all fishing and no stupid swimmers. Typically just people and there dogs trying to steal my cut bait! lol
havent been there in a bit but there was a blue heron at station 30 that would try to get into my bait bucket every time…especially if i netted some mullet. stupid bird even followed me when i walked out chest deep to cast a live mullet! would be quite useful if i could train it to squak whenever my rod is going off if its just gonna stand around me anyways though! dogs are nothing new and those i dont mind. racrx you arent kidding…im from up north and even i knew that sharks come very close to shore even before being stationed down here and theyre here whether you fish, chum, … for em or not especially at night. the funniest thing thats happened was someone claiming to be in peta started talking to me while i was shark fishing one evening. she said she was in the big animal rights group from new york (theyre based in norfolk), couldnt think of the name, and i had to remind her what it was called. asked me what i was using for bait and i definately had to describe to her what a stingray is since she didn’t know. i was very respectful of her opinion and never poked fun at her in person as to not give us fishermen a bad name, but it was EXTREMELY hard not to laugh!!!
Tell her to go away, you left your harpoon at the house, so you’re not fishing for whales.
“I wouldn’t swim over here - I’m fishing with live sharks for bait!”

When you see someone out there by your line, that’s when you grab your rod and start pulling really hard and yelling “Oh ****! This shark is huge!”. Whenever my dad and I caught a shark, we had a nice little crowd around us. We were getting ready to get it back in the water and some lady was like “you’re going to put that thing back???”. Needless to say, we had that area to ourselves for the rest of the day.
