Hey guys, I just started surf fishing a few weeks ago. I’ve been fishing near the roundhouse at Breach Inlet, and the first time I fished there in early March, I caught two reds. The past 5 weeks, however, I havent caught a single fish. I’ve been fishing with Gulp! ghost shrimp and swimming mullet. I just want to know if I need to fish with different bait, or if there are any good surf fishing spots that y’all are willing to share with me? I do not particularly want to fish off of a pier because I prefer being on the actual beach. I’m a new to surf fishing so any advice y’all have I would appreciate it. Thanks!
Short answer? Yes, different bait and location. Fresh shrimp, cut bait, live minnows will produce much better than artifictials in the surf zone. And try many different areas. Scout the beach at low tide looking for troughs, holes, cuts, any deeper sections of bottom will hold fish.
Here is a pic of a typical trough. And yes it is VERY close.
Thanks dparker677. I appreciate it!
Happy Easter and welcome to CF. If something isn’t working you have nothing to loose if you change it up. Whether it be location and your choice of bait. I agree with Mr. Parker with the shrimp and cut fish strips or chunks. Everything hits shrimp. Buy decent quality and cut in half or use thirds. Good luck, read the forum and post them up! We love to see fish pics:smiley:
This is most of what you need to know.

Fresh shrimp. When you catch a small whiting, you can cut that up for bait to catch more whiting. The whiting stays on the hook better than shrimp. Small sharp hooks with small cut shrimp. I keep my drags loose, some people may beg to differ on that
