Ive always been primarily a mono guy except for jigging offshore, but recently read an article and thought it might be a good idea to spool up with braid this season instead of mono for light surf fishing (whiting, reds, etc.) Just curious to see everyone’s response. Got the itch bad Charlotte isn’t cutting it!
I personally find that braid tends too hook up or detect the bite quicker when fishing for whiting.
If you surf fish with a spinning outfit you would need a long mono shock leader or a break-a-way cannon to cast braid. You would not want to be holding it with your index finger when you do an off the ground cast. Cut the snot out of ya. It is good feeling the bite though! With a conventional outfit I don’t think it would matter. I put it on my bottom rod and catfish rod this year but, I usually fish out a boat or off a pier. A Penn9 and a 6500. I’m trying it one more time this year.

I have sliced my index finger more times that I care to think about while casting with braid in the surf. I now use either all mono, or a long mono leader/topshot above the braid like jford said.
I find that braid tends to fray on sand and shells. And really untill fall, most all surf fish are “light”. Most Whiting I catch knock the crap out of the bait, not much to detect, and they hook themselves. Caught a healthy sharpnose the other weekend on 15lb. mono, no problem.
