Surf fishing @ Edisto

I need some constructive ■■■■■■■■ from you folks.

I’m relatively new to fishing, and I’m hooked (no pun intended). I’m trying to learn all that I possibly can. I don’t yet have a boat, so - for now - I’m stuck on the beach surf fishing.

I had several rods going on a stretch of beach on the Atlantic side of Edisto on two different days. I also ventured over to the Sound side of Edisto to give it a shot.

For bait, I tried shrimp, squid, cut mullet (caught with my castnet), halves of blue crab (caught in my crab pot), and some other cut bait.

I had absolutely no luck whatsoever. The only thing I caught was a couple of horsehoe crabs and a stone crab claw. I did not get a single bite over the course of three days!! I tried both the outgoing and incoming tides.

It’s a lot of fun, but it sure would be nice to actually catch something. I did catch some whiting and blues last fall on the beach, and I’ve caught a few fish here and there, so it’s not like I have never caught anything. But I feel like I’m missing something that I don’t realize. Basically, I really don’t know what I’m doing.

Any suggestions, thoughts or other ■■■■■■■■ for fishing the surf at Edisto? (I know it will be more exciting when I can get back into the creeks.)

I greatly appreciate it. This website seems to be a great resource, and I hope to learn a bunch from all of you.

there is a lot of good stuff in the “edisto surf” topic a few topics down.

what time of year were you fishing? sounds like the water might have been too cold.

Nothin’…nothin’ at all.

did the wind have the water all choppy and muddy?

I don’t remember it being particularly windy or rough.

I was on the Atlantic side on Friday afternoon and on Saturday afternoon.

I went over on the Sound side on Saturday morning around 5:30 a.m. (incoming tide) There was a wicked current taking my line up onto the beach within minutes. So I moved further up the beach away from the Atlantic, and found a spot near the sand bar. I cast my line out as near that sand bar as I could get, using crab for bait, but got no action at all.

I’m just trying to learn more so I can know better what I’m doing next time. Thoughts? What have you had luck with in the surf?

Just tryin’ to learn every bit I can about fishin’…

Fish up in the rocks on one of the groins (rocks extending out from the beach) or at least near them. Black drum will get up in those rocks to feed…you’ll at least catch a shark or ray fishing near them…sometimes something else. You’ll lose some tackle so have extra. Your baits are all good. Patience. Beer. Food.

my dad use to have good luck with the spot tails on the incoming tide at the point where the sound and ocean meet. Its near the 3000 block. He would use mud minnows and cut bait. This is one of the ones he cought last june

I fished the incoming tide where the sound and the atlantic come together and got nothing. I had heard that reds were there, so I used crab as bait. Maybe I just suck!

Nice fish, by the way!!

I’ve caught some nice fish on that bar you talk about. I’ve also had days with not a bite. Sometimes just lots of little sharks and an few whiting. You never know. The rock groins hold fish! I’ve always had better luck in the surf at Edisto rather than the sound. If water looks like a Youhoo go crabbing or park it on the beach with a cooler under an umbrella.(don’t fish) You keep on with the fresh bait you talked about and you will get some fish. Move some if needed.
