I have been on this forum since early August and I have been reading about places to go surf fishing, and I have visited these places without any luck. I have been to Breaches Inlet, Folly Beach, and the inlet at folly where the light house is. I have used mullet, whiting, shrimp, and squid. I have also used both double dropper rigs, as well as carolina rigs. I have been at dead low tide, dead high tide, and fished both the incoming and outgoing tides. I have done all of this with no success. Is it me, or are the fish just not biting?
Oh and I went with a friend today to the light house and we both had our braid cut off CLEAN, and our bait and hooks stolen without any movement to the rods. Our baits were at least 80 yards apart and this was at different times. Was this a big fish with super sharp teeth?
Thanks in advance for any advice, comments, or opinions!!!
bluefish may be what cut you off. are you using any leader material or tieing straight to braid? what about hook and bait size? if your not looking for sharks or bull reds then use small hooks and bait. i never use hooks larger than 1o, most of the time its a #1. peel those shrimp and fish stucture. you dont have to cast out a mile, stay right behind the breakers if your on the beach.
others can deff add what works for them but we will get you catching fish. july and aug seem to be my toughest time to catch fish.
Get out and walk the beach at falling to dead low tide. Look around, and most of the beach is flat and featureless. Look for the gulleys, drains, and holes exposed when the tide is out. Hit those spots when the water is covering them. The best type of drain extends down the width of the beach towards deeper water, you can work the length of it as the tide drops/rises. Fish will use those drains as migration routes.
Try this it works for most people. Get you what they call a fishfinder rig, 2 oz pryamid sinker, a 12 in nylon liter, and use a #6 crappie hook, any tackle shop would show what size hook you need. Here is a neat little trick I do some times and I have tore the trout up. Get you some large split shot weights and put the about a foot up from the hook, use a #2 hook and a mud minnow. Stand a bit off from the rocks on a outgoing tide and cast towards the rocks, when you reel in bounce the line just as if you are bass fishing. That rig will also work for flounder. I hope that helps
thanks for all of the advice so far. I will give all of your advice a shot. I cannot remember what size my hooks and I threw the packages away in which they came so I cannot look it up. I would like to target the reds or anything with size, but as of right now I would just like to catch a fish.
heartofthesun I used a wire leader which ran to mono. the braid was 50#, but I realize that anything with teeth would shred through the braid without any problem. I just cant believe there wasn’t any type of movement on the rod unless it was subtle.
