if i were a fish, i’d skip the 3/0(?) kahle and go straight for those bright colored eggs
I’d be a little skeptical of those snaps…just sayin’…
I’ve had the most success with tiny Eagle claw hooks. I’m not sure of the size offhand but they are small. Hooks as big as the ones you found miss the fish most of the time. There’s a ton of pompano and whiting bites missed by guys using those bigger hooks. The tiny little hooks seem to hold up very well to stingrays and reds too. Water is too cold for me to surf fish but once it warms back up I’ll be giving it a go.
this one is big for me too, first one I found rigged on a dropper in the garage… 1/0 eagle claws work well to select for bigger whiting, but I tend to use a #2 j-hook for the reasons mentioned.
haven’t seen a pomp in years, sure do miss them. wasn’t yours in may of last year, dparker? somebody caught a nice one on the north end of folly really early in the season. heard of some good 2+lbers in the surf through the summer too.

On a quick afternoon trip late this fall at Litchfield I had one heck of a day using two of those store bought rigs with the red beads and fresh shrimp. Nine large pomps, six keeper whiting and three well over slot reds. Not sure if the beads had anything to do with it or if the fish just happened to be there.
“Choose my bluest tape and unlock my car, An honest tune with a lingering lead has taken me this far”
Sometimes they see the bead and that makes them find your bait. I used to have a problem with mackerel eating my swivels. Same concept.
#4 owners work wonders. 3.00 at walmart. It is best to tie your own and use no swivels anywhere on the rig by making loop knots on top and bottom and snelling your hook and connecting it to the leader with a hitch knot. Only hooks, maybe beads and the sinker are in the water, no swivels for the fish to see.
usually have one with shrimp and one with tiny pieces of the tail of a whiting or finger mullet on another with size 3/0 hooks for rays , reds and blues.

Wall-Mart sells a pack of hooks in a small plastic container with 2 sizes in the pack called snapper hooks like 20 hooks for $2 the large ones are regular silver eagle clawish circle hooks( not big hooks), but the little black ones that are in the pack are super strong and catch almost every thing that bits but the monsters. I have caught both of my biggest trouts on them 22, 23, and multiple 30 inch reds and a few big black drum, monster stingrays and a bonnet head. I fish them with whole small 2 inch shrimp they are the smallest strongest circle hooks I have purchased and they are cheap. The silver ones in the pack aren’t as good so those are like by catch to me but the little guys are exceptional because you catch everything from the bait snatchers to trophy fish all right on the lip.

Didn’t realize some if you were using hooks that small. I’ve been using 2/0 and 3/0 hooks and catching fish in the past, but maybe I’ll try using the smaller ones.
Are y’all using circles primarily, or J hooks?
Circles everytime, but I may be still paddling in or out while something eats the bait rod. Circle is much more likely a caught fish than a lost one. Plus we fish at night a lot, sometimes it’s hard to see the bite
