Surf Fishing N. Myrtle Beach

I’m headed to the N. Myrtle Beach/Cherry Grove area next week and may try to do a little surf fishing. Couple of questions. First, what can I reasonably expect to catch if anything? Secondly, do I need to go on the heavier side with my gear or should I just take medium spinning gear?

I’ve been to the same place in past years, but usually in April Or May. Never have caught much worth mentioning, but we’re going later this year and I was hoping that something would be biting. We’re not taking the boat, so surf fishing or maybe pier fishing is my only choice. Would love to wet a line so what are my options?

I grew up fishing that area. Where abouts are you staying, I may know a few good spots to check out. This time of year, in the surf, you can expect to catch, Whiting, Spots, Croaker, Pinfish, Bluefish, Ladyfish? Pompano? Flounder? No need for heavy gear, only “big” things might be Sharks and Rays, both are illegal to target in Horry county. Fresh Shrimp pieces would be my first choice, Bloodworms are excellent, they are kinda pricey though. Mole crabs (Sandfleas) which you should be able to find in the “wash zones” on most of the beaches. We used to scoop them up by hand and keep them in our pockets.

Thank you dparker. I have a friend that owns a condo at Sunrise Point that’s on the beach right at 54th Ave & N. Ocean Blvd. Based on past trips, I kinda figured that medium gear would be appropriate. I just can’t get near any water without at least trying. In past years I have carried my boat and fished in House Creek. My success has been limited there. But early morning, a good cup of coffee, beautiful sunrise on the beach, what else could I ask for (except for a tug on my line)? Any tips are greatly appreciated.

That is a great stretch of beach. Walk the beach near low tide, there are usually some nice troughs and holes from there down to the Cherry Grove pier. And yes very early, by 10:00AM the beach will be slammed.

Good Luck! Post lots pf pics!

I grew up fishing there also. We use to fish on the marsh side. I think it was 58th ave. just find a street that dead ends at the marsh and fish. We use to catch lots of flounder, trout and red fish. Like dparker said use fresh shrimp or mud minnows for founder, trout and reds on a Carolina rig or popping cork. You will also catch the usual stuff spots and whiting.

Also good crabbing on the marsh side and you usually don’t have to worry about swimmers.

We’re in NMB now and the way it looked today you may be able to fish the surf a few hours early in the morning. When the swimmers start showing up you’ll probably be told to stop fishing. The beaches are packed from the dunes to the water.

I’d rather fish than eat.

We would only fish a couple of hours in the morning anyway so that’s fine.

Next 5 days I’ll be out on that side of N. Myrtle Beach and will be fishing the marsh side pretty heavily. I’ll be sure to let you know if I should have any luck. I will be targeting the flounder, trout, and reds. Past years, I’ve caught 10-15 flounder by cherry grove in a few hours time. Seven of them being keepers.
