Surf Fishing off Folly Beach?

Hello everyone I’ll be staying on Folly beach for two weeks at the end of May/ Beginning of June and plan on bringing fishing gear. I’ve never fished the Atlantic and was curious what I should bring in terms of rod and tackle, and also what I should fish for. Any incite will be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Any 4000 size reel on up, 5000 or 6000 is ideal. 15 pound mono/20 pound braid or so. Double drop rigs, stop by a tackle shop when here and they’ll get you what you need. Probably mostly catch whiting, but black drum, red drum, etc. are all in the surf. Cut shrimp is probably your best bait.

Bring a Tuna rod for sure, just kidding, 7ft spinning combo mid/fast action 4000 is what I always use and can land the big stuff and feel the small stuff. I like to hold my tip to what ever side the waves seem to be pulling and I hold it about about chest high to that side with constant light tension to get the best feel. You will feel a lot of movement between waves, current and your line hitting bumps in sand and shells, so it takes a little focus and commitment to hook most of your hits. But also bring a bigger heavier rod to put big baits on and put that past the breakers and set it in the rod holder. On the big rod I use circle hooks because those hooks are basically self setting and leave the drag loose enough to not get ripped out the rod holder. The little rod is your entertainment with all the action, but the big rod will be the crowd former/pleaser cause by time you fight a fish for more then five minutes you usually get on lookers.
