Do you need a large rod to fish the surf? I have a 6’6" medium action ugly stick, and I would rather not have to spend too much money on a new set up since I will only be here for another month or so. I have never surf fished before and I really want to try before I head back to school.
I have a 7’ medium action ugly stick that works fine, yours will too.
Our shore structure is such that you don’t benefit much from slinging the fool out of it. Just toss it out near the back of the breakers and use whatever size sinker you need to keep from snagging up.
I usually have to use my 7 foot medium action Uglystik paired with my Shakespeare 50 reel with 250 yards of 15 lb. test braid. This is because I usually have to use a 4 oz. or 5 oz. pyramid sinker on a single drop bottom rig, due to the rip and wave action. Sometimes when it is flat I can use my 6 foot light Uglystik paired with a 2000 Penn Sargus with 250 yards of 10 lb. test braid because a 1 oz. sinker can hold bottom. This weekend the surf is supposed to be kinda flat.
that will work just fine especially if you were just after whiting or something like that and if you hook a nice red or anything else bigger it will be a LOT more fun on the lighter rod that a heavy surf combo.
It’s worth a lot more memory points if you hook and land a big red, or shark, on a bass rod!!! OhioNavyNuke is right!
Thanks for the advice guys. I always choose to fish lighter tackle than advised. I totally agree when you say it is just more fun! Where is a good spot to go?
Folly by the light house or surf, Sullivan’s by the lighthouse or fort, Breach inlet and really most of the beaches around here. You will mainly have to get out by yourself and try. Good luck and tight lines .

Light travel’s faster than sound. This is why some people appear smart until you hear them speak.
