Surf fishing tomorrow Folly or IOP?

So I bit the bullet and instead of just going to the Folly pier and renting a rod tomorrow, I went to Haddrell’s and bought a rod and reel combo with some tackle and some frozen mullet. Talking with the salesman, he said that Breach inlet will be pretty good tomorrow, as well as Folly North End, but seemed that IOP would be a little better. What do you guys think? Also, being new to the area, how do I get to Breach inlet. He said it is pretty easy to find. Go to IOP and make a left.
Also, what would be the best time? Any help, tips, or insight would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much guys

I don’t know much about what you’re trying to do but be sure to let us know how you did, I’m gonna try to go to IOP in the next couple of days

Tried IOP on Thursday. The wind was a beast. Check the weather for tomorrow, I think its predicting rain and high winds again.

Weather is supposed to be tough for surf fishing this weekend. Cloudy, rainy, and windy out of the NE. But, if you still want to give it a try here are some more specific directions for surf fishing locations. Follow Coleman Blvd (turns into Ben Sawyer Blvd) across Ben Sawyer bridge to Sullivans Island. If you go right at the stop sign on Sullivans, follow the road (Middle St) to Ft Moultrie. Park at Station 12 and fish the areas around the rock jettys. Also fish the beach to your left around the Station 13 beach access. If you want to fish Breach Inlet or IOP, turn left at the stop sign on Sullivans. Follow road (Middle St), just past Station 32 you will see a parking lot on your right. You can park here to fish the rocks on the Sullivans side of Breach Inlet. Also area around Station 28 1/2 can be good. Or, just past the parking lot turn right onto Jasper Blvd, go across the bridge over Breach Inlet. There is a parking lot on the right on the IOP side of Breach. Park here, walk to the beach and fish the inlet to your left. I prefer to walk left along the beach until I am at the point where Breach Inlet meets the ocean, and farther left so you are casting out into the breaker from the IOP side. I prefer fishing around low tide - about 5:30pm today. Start 1 hour before, and fish the rising tide after dead low. Use small pieces of shrimp on #2 or 1/0 hooks on a double drop rig. I usually use a 2oz or 3oz pyramid sinker. Use the lightest needed to hold bottom. Be careful at Breach Inlet. The current there is very strong, and many people have drowned there. Do not swim or get in the water. Hope this helps. Feel free to email me with questions. Tight lines.

I have tried Breach Inlet several times on both north and south. I found the current is too strong. Caught mostly smaller whiting there, a small shark and small ray.

You might check out other posts with suggested spots. Also, get a casting net to catch your own live bait in the surf. Sounds like bait is returning slowly. I am interested to hear how it goes. Good luck!

Looks like Monday will be a better option.
I think I will try SI around Station 12 and 13 like Graceandhayes mentioned above. Thanks for the info.
Has anyone had any luck around the Folly lighthouse?
I plan on going in the morning, what would be a good time to head out?
Thanks for all the help and info guys…

I sent you a pm

I surf fished sullivans last week for about 6 hours. Only 3 small whiting. Fished folly pier today from daylight to 2 and only caught 3 whiting. Its been slow. Inshore has been much more productive lately. Good luck.

I fished folly pier with no luck today. A little to windy. I was thinking maybe tomorrow morning doing some surf fishing.
IOP or folly. If folly, what street is a good marker near the light house or other good places to fish. I am new to the area and today I drove from 2nd street down to 15th. What street number is a good spot?
Also, do you guys think James Island fishing dock would be worth it?
Thanks guys…

try the shem creek park. use cut shrimp.www.scgreatoutdoors.com/park-shemcreekpark.html

That looks pretty nice. Have you had any bites there? Thanks for the tip…

Think I will take King’s advice and try out Shem Creek Park. I have some frozen shrimp and some frozen mullet. Does 6:30 or 7 AM sound good? SHould I use any other bait? Thanks so much guys…

Fished folly today on the south side again, from peak high tide until about 3:45. Not a nibble, water felt colder than before the rain/cold front. Kind of a bummer, I’m getting antsy.

btshipp, were you south of the pier? If so, I recall a nice trough between 3rdw &7thw should be full of fish right now! Remember, don’t cast over them, they are alot closer than you would imagine. Use shrimp for now, the big whiting should be moving in soon. I did not get to the beach this weekend, weather & visitors. Did get to the pond and caught some Bass on Sat. Will be on the beach a couple afternoon’s this week, will post results.

“Tight Lines”

Hopefully I can try Breach Inlet this weekend myself.

Dparker you are absolutely right. Last summer I caught countless whiting and a bunch of red and black drum off of the 7th st jetty south of the pier. I typically go to 7th or further to avoid the crowds and tourists, plus it’s an easier hike than the north end. Personally I think there are troughs up and down the whole beach, but I haven’t decided/discovered the best place yet. I was just inside the 7th street jetty when I hooked a monster red last week. Nothing to show for it unfortunately. I may head out there this afternoon after work, will report back.

btshipp, the jetty that is just north or just south of 7th St? When I look on google maps there isn’t a jetty right off of 7th, but there is one on either side. Also, excuse my ignorance on the terms, are a jetty and a rock groin the same thing? Thanks!

David,

You could probably refer to them as either. I’m referring to the left side of the jetty that is just north of 8th street
