Still trying to get into surf fishing, Is it still good this time of year?
If fishing by the inlet by lighthouse, what type of bait is best, and how far out should u try casting. Any info would be very helpful.
Thanks
I’m no expert, but…
It can be a little tougher this time of year. As the water temps drop in fall/early winter, initially the bite picks up. As the temps continue to drop in mid/late winter, the bite slows down. I’ve not had much luck at North Folly (near the inlet) in mid/late winter. In general, shrimp is the better bait this time of year. Find a trough and cast into it. It varies by beach, but at North Folly, that usually means you have to cast a little farther at low tide (especially this time of year when you’re trying not to get wet), and a little nearer at high tide. Its been said a thousand times on this site, but its helpful to get out at low tide and scout the beach. Find the troughs and such. Good luck.
by the lighthouse i usually caught whiting, rays, and bonnetheads. cut shrimp is a pretty standard go to for smaller fish and a box of squid works well too. any bonnethead i got out there was on half a crab. i also tossed out some live horse mullet and had a pretty hard run last year but after a half an hour battle it cut me on the rocks so i never saw if it was a shark or a big ray. lighthouse isnt the fastest biting spot in the area and it does get a fair amount of pressure but you should at least catch something.
