Surf fishing ?

I fish offshore a good bit. I will be on vacation the week of gov. Cup. This year with slow offshore bite ( other than bottom fish) I’m opting to not bring the boat. Golf cart instead. I will hang out at the marina on weigh in days. I would like to bring some rods and let the kids catch some fish. ( sound and beach) what do I need to bring? I have anything from Zebco’s to 50wides. What to use for bait? I have cast net and pretty much everything just never did any surf fishing.

Just a semi large spinning reel on a decent casting rod will do. I tie about a 3 foot section of flouro (40-60lb) to a swivel with a decent circle hook on the end. Above the swivel, I put a pyramid sinker on a sinker slide (see picture). catch some FRESH (very important)bait. Finger mullet or large mullet (cut up in chunks) with work. Scout the beach out at low tide and find the gullies, or at high tide see where the waves come are breaking farther out. Fish those spots (especially the gullies) when the tide comes back in. Live blue crabs cut up work well too. The large Redfish don’t usually show up until the fall, but you may catch some sharks. Smaller gear with shrimp with put whiting and such on the other end of your line. You can see in the other pics that in some it was cold and some there were some smaller rod/reels used…etc. Good luck.
