Surf Fly Fishing???- Charleston, SC

Nothing going on in the fly-fishing section, so I figured I would post here.

So, I just took up fly fishing about 2 years ago and have recently been following the crazy striper fishermen that follow the fish from Montauk all the way down the East Coast.

Anyone seen or heard of anybody surf fly fishing on Folly, IOP, or Sullivans? Obviously we aren’t in a great location for stripers, but I have seen some huge bull reds pulled out of the surf at Folly along with various other pieces of meat.

Talk to the guys at Lowcountry Fly Shop. I was in there with a fly fishing friend last summer and they were talking about best times/conditions to fly fish in the surf here. I overheard some talk about late afternoons with sun at your back and clear water conditions you can see reds cruising in the surf. Give them a call, or stop by the shop in Mt Pleasant. They seem to know what they are talking about - coming from a guy who only fishes bait on the bottom.

I have seen a couple of fly fishermen fishing off the end of the rock groins at folly. They are fishing for trout. They seem to have some special felt looking shoes that helps them walk on the rocks. I personally would kill myself on the rocks so I don’t go on them. The only fly I remember seeing them use was black and wispy looking. I hope this helps. Oh and they used a line basket in front of them if that makes any sense.

Smokey seems to have it pretty figured out PM him.

As to what the guys at lowcountry fly shop said, I wouldn’t spend too much time working on that tactic, can’t say conditions are frequently favorable for It nor would it be a good use of your time when conditions are. Best to try around groins and troughs when water is somewhat clear and surf conditions allow. Trout and reds will be your main quarry.

I frankly don’t waste my time with it though.
