Surf/Pier Fishing

Hey guys
My family will all be meeting up in Folly Beach for my parents 20year anniversary. from April 20-24, and I’m itching to do some fishing. Ive surf and pier fished a dozen times or so, not that successfully, but i got a line wet and learned some. I was wondering if anyone could throw some tips/spots to me, so that i can make this a memorable time for my Dad, brother and I together. Thank you in advance!

Fresh shrimp, small hooks, on the bottom. Double drop rigs increase your hook up rate a bit. You will need 2-4 oz. Of weight to hold bottom. No real need to fish out real far, most surf fish are just a short cast out.

“If it were catching, Everyone would be good at it.”

Listen to DParker and do what he says. He knows how to catch fish in the surf in the Cton area.

For some reason it didn’t quote me last time. Perfect dparker, thank you! Are you still casting past the wave break?

I do well with squid also. Stays on the hook longer usually. I usually cast as far as I can, then pull the rig in every now and then if I’m not getting any bites to figure out where the fish are at.

DParker is the unofficial leader of the Surf/Pier Fishing section. Good guy.

First off, there are fish virtually everywhere in the surf. From whiting, spots and croakers to black/red drum, specks and many others plus all the toothy/thorny things. Having said that though, I find they are much more concetrated in the deeper spots. Call them what you want, trough, ditch, wash, pocket, cut what ever. Look for sections or areas of deeper water. I prefer a good trough, (runs parallel to the beach) and easier to find. Some can be 200-300yrds long. And find deeper “holes” within it. Low tide is the best time to find them. I’m not a shark fisherman, but if they interest you, cast out beyond the sandbar with a chunk of cut fish, thats where most of them live. If you find yourself wading through hip deep water to a sandbar to cast…you walked past the fish. [:0] IMO

Here is a pic from Oct. about a hour before low tide. Can you see it??? My baits are ONLY 20’-40’ from the rods. Caught a few slot black drum that day.

That there is a thang of beauty dparker. Just made it my background on my PC I’m so inspired!

Great pic dparker! We will be staying off East Ashley, so if you see someone fishing the beach there, please stop and say hello!

I don’t get to Folly much these days. Check out between 8th-11th east. Was one of my favorite areas. Not sure what it’s like these days, especially since the renourishment.

I agree with Dparker. Usually when I’m surf fishing I use a double hooks with a triangle weight on the bottom about 150 yars from the shore… Most times I’ve been nothing but some blue, spot and stingrays
