Surf Rod/Reel

Was looking for the right setup for surf fishing. Would a Penn Spinfisher 5000 size real with 30 or 40 braid be correct or would a larger reel (6 or 7000) work better. Also what length and line rating rod should I use?

30lb braid would work great on an SSV5000. You could fit a ton of line on there!

My 2 cents…From the pier braid is great. But from the beach not so good. The sand and shells or really tough on braid, one little nick and it “WILL” break. As for rod and real, it really depends on the target. I use Boca 50’s, 9’ med.heavy rod with 15 & 20lb mono with a short 60lb leader, that’s it! I’ve landed anything from Whiting to 4-5’ Sand Bar Sharks. I really can’t remember the last time a fish broke me off.

two more cents…

I agree, don’t use braid on the beach. Use mono.

I have 8’ med heavy rod with an Abu Garcia spooled with 25lb. The rod is a tad short and the 25lb test is too much, but it works. Will probably re-spool with 20ld test and switch to a 9 or 10 ft rod.

I also use an Abu Garcia spinning reel on a 7ft med heavy ugly stick, using 15 lb test. Kind of a light for a surf rig but I like it. (Pulled in a 27"er off the surf with it this past Sunday).

I also use a 60lb leader for the surf but that thick line makes it a little harder to tie on smaller hooks. I plan on dropping down to a 30 or 40 lb leader.

Try a double drop rig with snap swivels. That’s all I use, makes changing hooks simple. STAY AWAY FROM “HURRICANE” LABLED RIGS! Like the ones at Wallys World. I have had to many of them fail at the crimps. Here is what I use. 18" swivel to swivel.
