Successful day out Shark Fishing with SC DNR. Caught one 6 Ft. Lemon Shark and one Blacktip Shark… Should of had 2 blacktips but the 2nd one spit the hook. We didn’t get any pics of the Lemon Shark, but we did get a few of the Blacktip! Blood Sample went smooth, Satellite Tag went smooth, and Acoustic Tag went smooth. Perfect release too!
Idk if they are just studying our Blacktips but further south is a ajor breeding ground. Probably a good place to get data. The black tips there are like 140lbs full grown fish. Also something most people will never believe is a saw At least 1 black tip jumping and work menhadden in the harbor but there were dolphins jumping and feeding right next to it. It was a solid 5ft tipper and it skyed like 5 to 8ft out and spins. Right after a young dolphin jumps in the same spot. 100% positive because of vertical vs horizontal fins. The little dolphin was like 5ft also and jumped like the same height and was kicking his tale up and down. It looked funny. This was between the tower and fort Sumter on high going out.
What kind of data are you guys trying to get? Just collecting, trying to prove a hypothesis or answer a question?
Since Blacktips are the most common Sharks caught by people fishing in the surf, they are trying to determine how stressed Blacktips are after being caught. So far every shark has shown LOW stress levels.
interesting i do tagging through NOAA myself and so far have tagged at least a dozen this year and could have tagged 8 more while i was waiting on more tags lol. just curious how do you figure out the stress levels of the sharks? seeing as the ones i release are all thrashing strong i probably would have guessed lower stress levels but of course dont have anything to actually confirm it.

Unlike a static tag, which is only useful if the Shark is recaptured. They are tagging my sharks with Acoustic and Satellite Tags so they can track the Shark in real time. Also they are taking a small sample of blood from each shark and running it to test for stress.
