What’s everyone throwing this summer for Tailing Reds in the grass?
I caught one the other week with a mouse hair popper, big eyes and a red tail.
Gold spoon fly and crab imitations.
If a man wakes up early to go fishing he 's sleep deprived, If a man wakes up late to go fishing he’s fish deprived
I’ve been doing pretty well on a weedless shrimp pattern and a weighted crab pattern.
Caught one last night on a gold spoon. Anyone know where to find dupree spoons?
They are pretty tought to come by around here you may want to try Bay Steet Outfitter down in the Beaufort / Hilton Head area.

Roger. Thanks for the info.
No Dupree’s in Beaufort!
I’ve tried to find them online too and no luck. I did find the below quote in an article from flyfishinsalt.com
http://www.flyfishinsalt.com/article.jsp?ID=32181&typeID=333&categoryID=254
“The Spoonfly is an epoxy creation of Capt. Jim Dupre (352-371-6153), a Gainesville, Florida, fishing guide who, with his father A.J., spent countless hours testing and perfecting a fly-rod lure that had the same fish-attracting action as the venerable Johnson Weedless Minnow.”
I don’t know if the number is valid.
Let me know if you find them.
I’ve made several versions trying to copy or at least mimic his design. Even though the real ones are expensive, they are worth it. Epoxy spoon flies are hard to make and they don’t stand up to much abuse.

Bug. Your right. The ones I have purchased from the angler are flimsy. Its like the epoxy hasn’t set. Every time I tie one on I end up bending the wings. They are aslo far too light and thus will not sink quickly enough. The dupre’s are the heaviest and most durable spoon I have found (now I can’t find them.) I am going to call the number. I’ll let you know what I find out.
Calibogue. Bay Street doesn’t have anything?
No Dupree’s…they have others but not Dupree.

Roger.
You can tie-in a set of dumbelly eyes to the back of an ordinary spoon fly, even some bucktail. I like the Dupree b/c of the wire weed guard…its mor durable and I am going to find some for more of my flies. Here is a fly I modified w/ weight and some fox squirrel tail…

That thing looks deadly.
Lowcountry Anglers in Bluffton SC is the closest place to get Dupree’s. They are easily the best spoon fly I have ever come accross
Check out this site. www.nwmangum.com/spoonfly/index.html, I tied these using their instructions, except I used a peel and stick gold fold, with fantastic success. They are as “hard” as the Dupre. I haven’t located the perfect hook for them yet, but other than that they are very easy to make. I took them out and to check their action, and they have a perfect spoon wooble.
most tackle shops buy from cheap overseas producers- make your own their fairly easy- do invest in a rotary drier and steer away from the 5min epoxy. if you want to get fancy, b/f you put on the prism tape, use a “press on” fake nail as a platform, but not really nec.
