Had the privilege yesterday again of riding out on the Miss Amanda with Lynnmcd and Kut08. I’ve never caught a large winter wahoo before. Heck, I’ve never caught a large wahoo before. HECK! I’ve never caught a really large fish before!!! Anyway, I digress. I’ve been talking with my wife the last few weeks about wanting to make one winter run once a nice day showed up to go hunt down a big Hoo. Hooked up with Lynn, and off we went.
The weather man was predicting really nice seas (1 to 2’s) at like 11 seconds with like 5 knot winds. The day started that way, but for the last half . . . . . HE LIED!!! It was blowing like 20, 3 to 5’s at like 4 seconds. Anyway, here’s the story.
Left the dock at Shem and headed towards the G-town Hole. We got there and stayed just west of the Hole, on the plateau, and found schools of tuna busting the tops. Trolled around for a bit chasing them and scared up one nice black fin.
Left there and headed up towards the Southwest Banks, trying to stay between 150 and 180 feet looking for that Hoo. Got close the Banks and found a weed line that if it were May would have held a ton of Dolphin. Just as we were about to give up, pull the rods in and head to the Banks for some bottom fishing, the cheap rod and star drag real on the outrigger with the bright pink and white Islander goes off. We end up bringing in a really nice sized Hoo. We circle back around a few times, have another hit on the really cheap rod and the fish let go. At least that’s what Kut08 will tell ya.
We then decide to leave as the wind was picking up quickly and the surf was growing. Once we got underway, we could barely make 10 mph. It was a tough go. Then, about 10 miles into our 50 mile trek back to the rocks, the motor starts to act up. Can’t get more than 8 mph out of her. Ended up talking to Tow Boat all the way in to make sure we had comm’s with them in case the motor decided to quite all together. I have to give a big shout to Marrissa at Tow Boat for being so amazing
Well, we set out to catch a hoo and a bft, so we accomplished that!
I had a great time with the Joisy Boys, as usual!!
I hate the Miss Amanda caught a cold, but with 2260+ hours, she’s allowed one here and there. I just wish she would have waited 'til we got a littler closer to the rocks!!
Oh well, we still had a great day of fishing in January and only burned around 40 gallons of petro going to the GTH and back!
Yes, Marisa was awesome at checking on us and keeping our wives informed of our progress!! Thanks Mrs. Little!!
NN, we didn’t weigh it, but I was thinking it was between 50 and 60 lbs.
ferreel, my unit was reading as high as 71.6 around the hole and closer to 70.3 around the banks.

Yeah, the FL was 58". No idea what the weight was. It felt like it was over 50, or somewhere close. My guess could be way off, but it was a heavy fish.
