I want to catch a tarpon from my kayak this this year. What bait/rigs do you use? Do any lures work? Thanks.

There may be a better way to drown yourself and still have fun doing it, but I’m not sure what it could be…

I’ve had good luck catching tarpon with big swim baits off of sand bars in the sounds.
Next time you come in, come heavy, or not at all…
If you would like a fellow kayaker to join, let me know. I’m looking to get out there at some point. I’m riding a slayer propel 13.

It would certainly be a good sleigh ride. They are pretty tough enough in a 19’ power boat. Inlet mouths and sloughs between sand bars off the beach fronts is where they will be. Best in late summer. I would use live fish and crabs for bait.
You will probably catch a lot of sharks while waiting for a tarpon.

If you want to catch a tarpon in a kayak, you should head to south FL for a week. Got a few around bridges in the Keys. You will spend a looooooot less time sitting around drowning baits if you head down there for a week during the hot tarpon season than trying in SC for months and months and months.
