Anyone heard or seen tarpon in our area yet? I am new to the area and would like to learn about the tarpon fishery. I have heard they like some of our larger inlets. Any information or guidance would be most appreciated
top spot maps have some info. dont know how good it is.
Its possible to hook them from the shore but ive never been able to land one that way. You want to try the small to medium sized inlets and look for mullet schooling up. The surface of the water will nearly boil when the tarpon are really hunting. I have had the best luck with fresh mullet on a 5’ leader and a balloon just when the tide starts to come in. They will often lay in the shallower water next to a jetty to ambush the mullet when they come in with the tide. One down side is you will often hook sharks and lose your whole rig.

I’ve seen them just outside the breakers in Savannah while I sat on Tybee.
Only tarpon I’ve hooked was about right here:
32.267513, -80.647684
I’ve seen them roll in that area several outings.
Had one free jump beside us about right here one time:
32.331634, -80.456871
I’m inland, so I don’t have a ton of experience targeting them. These are just my few lucky interactions.

Fripp Inlet, Port Royal Sound. Have caught them from late June to early Oct. Big mullet has been my best bait
