Congratulations on a fish of a lifetime.
If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.

Steve Roff, Barrier Isl. He probably does more than that.

Steve Roff catches more than 50. Jordan Pate catches a lot. Not sure if he lands 50 but I guarantee you he hooks up a lot more than 50 each year.

none of us are saying that - I think the point was missed.
Oh what enjoyable antics.
My take on matters-
The stress of putting them into a boat sucks for them. I know anything that is scary enough that I **** my pants is not something I want to relive. But realistically they breathe air…they’re going to be ok. In other places the concern is throwing a fatigued fish back into the water with large aggressive sharks. Luckily we don’t have a large number of sharks that are capable of taking down a mature tarpon. So treat them as gently as possible and make sure they are revived properly if you take them out. If you’re not capable of this then leave them in the water.
I also agree with Hunter from a photography POV that they look prettier in the water but thats personal preference.
Now for the big matter that 95% of people are getting incorrect-catching a 100# tarpon doesn’t take an hour. If you’re doing it right…15-20 minutes max. You should be able to do that with 20# leader. There is a lot of rod technique involved. So change your mind set 95%ers. Accept that you can catch big fish fast and make your goal to be to learn how to do it.
Nice fish, Fritz.

22-25 I believe would be our local record. But the person who did that would have to verify that and confirm the number. I am fairly certain both Fritz and Hunter caught a few of those fish two years ago if my memory serves me correctly.
Not sure if anyone in Georgetown has caught more than 22-25, could be possible

Talked to Steve Roff with barrier island guide service yesterday and he caught 55 last year. He’s based out of Georgetown.

Fact:
Between 1993-2011, charterboats in SC reported catching 3,583 tarpon. So that’s about 200 year just from the charter guys. Unfortunately, there is not a very reliable mechanism in place to capture what the “regular” recreational sector contributes annually.
All I know is that I haven’t contributed jack @#$% to those numbers and to hear of people catching 50-60 a year makes me want to quit fishing for tarpon and take up golf.
Steve dialed in something special up there and is way up past 50 presently, as thats what he does every day the weather and tides allow. Fish come to that area and stick, whereas here in Chas they just pass through it seems.
Tarpon have a way of heightening egos and such, I’ve seen it a lot over the years and dealt with it myself for a bit. Enjoy every encounter, respect the fish and don’t compare your numbers to those of guys who do it every day. That’ll do ya more harm than good.
