If anybody is planning on using Steamboat Landing in next 2 months, you’ll need to put in elsewhere. Chas County is closing the landing from July 9th to Sept 17th for road repairs/maintenance. While I agree the road is in need of repair, seems like they could have picked a better time of year to close the landing.
At least it will be finished before September. That place fills up during shrimp baiting season. We quit using Steamboat because of the road. We’ve been using the Dawho bridge ramp when we go out the North end of the island. Good to know they are planning to repair it.

I didn’t even know there was a ramp at the big bridge. That’s good to know. Yes, I am a rookie.

Easiest one to get to on the Island
Glad they are fixing it. Was down there a few weeks ago and that place by the guard-rail was tight. A good storm and that road would be gone.
Ain’t no shrimps at Steamboat though!

Was at Steamboat yesterday and was surprised that I had not read about the closing on here. Drove two and a half hours to get there.(three hours counting the flat tire on the boat trailer)
They closed Steamboat years ago to fix either the bridge or that retaining wall and it stayed closed for over a year. When you see the mess they have to start with, it doesn’t seem like two months is enough time. Hope it doesn’t drag out forever again, I like to fish out of Steamboat in the fall.
Way back in the early 90’s, my college roommate and myself went spot tail bass fishing and shrimping out of Steamboat Landing in October. The HIGH tide was incredible. We drove through the wash out where the guard rail is today in 2 ft of water across the road. We will see how good of a job is done on the road after the high tides of October this year.
My big problem with this is why they elect to do this in the middle of the summer? Now the vacationers (like myself) end up with one free public access that’s close to nothing.
I realize that this is a busy ramp during shrimping season, but what’s wrong with November thru May?

I know of some people who have shrimped out of Steamboat years ago. I sure don’t hear much talk about it on here. Must be a conspiracy!
There is some muddy flats there where you could shrimp in the daytime. K Ulmer - do you see a lot of pole sets there in the fall or they just putting in there to go elsewhere? Just wondering - nice to have a fall back spot when weather is snotty.

I only know that it’s very easy to catch bait/shrimp for fishing out of Steamboat in the middle of the Summer. That’s my favorite place to fish out of when we vacation at Edisto in late July. With costs at the state park going up and $10 at the marina with no place to park, it’s frustrating when the county closes this ramp during the height of vacation season.

This is bad news about steamboat landing. We usually use this landing to take the kids crabbing and do a little shark fishing while they are at it. Any ideas for a good alternate location for this now. Thanks

Does anybody know if they may be finished with Steamboat Landing. I know it’s not slated to open for another week, I was just wondering if they may have finished early(wishful thinking). I was looking for a place to go fishing tomorrow and wanted to put in there.
The sign said the work would be completed on Sept 7th. I rode down to Steamboat on Sunday and it appears they have it reopened. The erosion problem has been patched up nicely, hopefully will last longer than previous attempts.
