The 5th Annual Heroes on the Water Tounrey

Hey Folks, the leadership of the Chapter has changed and the new Chapter Coordinator is still out of the country but we are still gonna do this… Little shorter notice but we should still be able to pull this off… Scott has asked me to be the Tournament Director again but i think this year we should have 2 of us, DolphinD how about being my Co-Director?

I am looking at Saturday October 19th, Sunrise is at 7:30 AM, the high tide is at 8:55 Am and it is predicted to be around a 6.5. Of course of we have another Hurricane Sandy episode like last year, if we can the push back will be Sunday the 20th I tides are about the same) or we can push back to November 2nd, the tides are about the same in height and time. Sunrise/safe launch will be about 7:30 either way.

CPR Tourney, and as always the identifier MUST be in the Photo.

All CHARLESTON waters are permissible to fish. (Edisto River to Bulls Bay). Any further North or South and you will be DQ’ed.

Longest Redfish wins, we will have 1st, 2nd and 3rd place, Min 15" fish to be scored, and this year besides the Splooshers Cup for last place we will also have a most Spots Prize. Must be more than 3 spots any size fish can be scored for this. There may not be a fly division this year… I’ll check more on that. if I can arrange to qet least 3 Fly Prizes we will if not we’ll skip it this year.

What we need from ya’ll, besides attending

  1. SPREAD THE WORD

  2. We need a location for the Capts Meeting and if possible a sponsor for the grub.

  3. We need a location for the Weigh in (Both of these should be Mt P locations of possible for centrality of the fishing area)

  4. Prizes. if you have a business that can donate a prize that would be awesome or if you know someone who can donate either a prize or money to buy a prize let me know. We usually have a rod/reel combo for 1st, a paddle or something for 2nd and a prize pack for 3rd. What ever we can get we’ll adjust fire. We also need raffle prizes the more the merrier

  5. Sp

is there any interest?

Ken, I will be out of town this week, but when I get back we should get together and do some planning!

Gimme a shout when yer back Dolphin and we’ll make plans… Right now it looks like we may have the WW Cafe in Mt P for the Capts meeting again and possibly the weigh in as well… hopefully the storms stay away this year… I have e-mails out about t-shirts and the identifiers… so the ball is rolling. I fished this tounament last year and had a blast. Would be glad to help out anyway I can. Please let me know.

Mike

Is the registration fee paid before the tournament or the day of? I know a few military people in the area who kayak fish and would most likely be interested in helping their wounded brothers and sisters in arms.

The entry fee is paid the night before at the Capts Meeting. The new Chapter Coordinator may set up a pay pal, or already have one, if so I will post details on how to pay that way but usually it is at the Capts Meeting. Right now we don;t have any injured Vets fishing but we are hoping to have a few this year. Last year the entry fee for Active Duty Military was $30. If you are active Duty and that is still a little steep for you contact me and we’ll work it out. We WILL get ya fishing in this tourney, I promise on my retired MSgt Stripes

Didn’t know you were retired AF. I’m active duty and I’ll participate. So far my schedule shows I’ll be off those days so hopefully nothing comes up. I’ll talk to some of the guys at the squadron today and see if I can get anyone else on board.

Count on me for at least two people. This was a great event last year. And, most importantly, it supports a very worthy cause.

A couple people have asked so I’ll add a few more details…

The tournament supports the SC Chapter of Heroes on the Water. The basic premise of HOW is to take injured War vets kayak fishing to help aid in their therapy and recovery, although we will support ANY Injured Vet that this therapy will help! All money from the tourney goes to the SC Chapter of HOW, which uses that to pay ALL COSTS for an identified Vet to come fish. We cover travel, lodging, food equipment and licenses. Sometimes this can get pricey so this is our yearly way to get those funds.

The tournament is a CPR ( Catch Photo Release) format. A special identifier will be issued at the Capts meeting the night before and that identifier MUST BE IN ALL PHOTOS of fish to be scored. The fish must be photographed on a ruler where the nose of the fish and tail are clearly visible and the identifier in the photo. At the “weigh in” you will turn in your SD card with the images and they will be copied to a folder then scored by the tourney director. Most of the rulers available out there will work, SCDNR has one they give out free and can usually be found at the Charleston Angler. I still have a few i will bring but they will be first come first serve.

For Injured Vets ( you do not have to have been injured in combat) the entry fee is Free and if needed we will provide equipment and kayaks. Active Duty military entry fee will be $30 ($40 regularly). For everyone else it is $40 and any additional donations are greatly appreciated. We will also have raffles going on, you will get one ticket when you register and additional tickets will be available for sale. usually its $2 a piece or 10 for $15 or something like that. Last year we had a bunch of raffle prizes and I am working on trying to get the same amount this year. if you know of a business that can donate anything let us know. All donations are tax deductible.

it is relly an opportunity to raise awareness and money for the SC Chapter of HOW and to fish and enjoy the day. Priz

I’d like to say thanks to Ken for getting this rolling! I look forward to seeing everyone at the Captain’s meeting…

^X2. This is a great tournament for people that might be skeptical about tourney fishing. This is a really fun event. If you’re new to kayak fishing and not sure if you’re ready to enter tournaments, please, give this one a try. It’s casual, well run, and the raffle prizes are great. Plus, it benefits a great cause. The $40 entry fee is affordable and weather you catch fish or not you’ll be glad you came out.

If two wrongs don’t make a right, try three.

I can’t take all the credit for this… DolphinD was the one who was gonna get it rolling, he was outa town and I just have more experience  but I will be skoolin him in the ways of the Tourney Director and he will be the man next year

we try to make it as low stress as possible… Lord knows there are PLENTY of tourneys out there that are full of people who will cheat to win and the stress level is maxed out due to huge prizes and checks… Like JP Said, we are laid back and just want to have fun.

We still have rules and if you don’t follow them you will get DQ’d, we actually had to DQ what would have been the 2nd place fish because they left the identifier out of the photo… hint, don’t do that. C’Mon out and have some fun and support a GREAT cause!

Ken, did you decide on a final date for the tournament?

the 19th is the primary date with the capts meeting on the 18th if we have another hurricane like last year we will push back to Nov 2nd. So far the Capts meeting is going to be at the Wild Wing Cafe on Coleman Blvd and hopefully the weigh in will be there too. I have not yet been able to firm up the location yet. I am going to make some calls this week and have an answer for sure soon but fishing will be on October 19th.
