With old man winter quickly approaching there will be plenty of days where fishing is just not feasible. The wind is going to blow and we all begin to dread the cabin fever we know will be setting in on us. Over the years I have tried my best to get my fix by watching fishing shows on television and reading several different fishing publications. While this does not cure cabin fever it can certainly help.
A few years ago I picked up Ken Schultz’s Fishing Encyclopedia. I have really enjoyed reading Ken’s writings in Field and Stream and other publications over the years and thought the encyclopedia would be a great coffee table book for the house. When I went to the bookstore to pick it up I quickly realized that I was going to need a bigger table. The Encyclopedia is over 1900 pages long and very heavy.
In the past 2 years I’ve had some time to read through several sections and skim many others and I have to say that this is one of the most comprehensive books on fishing that I’ve read. It covers everything you can think of and gives more detail on topics than I would have expected. It is filled with written information and also offers great diagrams to go with each section. There are sections devoted to basic terminology and other sections that talk about more advanced techniques and tackle. There are breakdowns on I really think Schultz does a great job providing something for everyone and was surprised at how much I was able to learn while reading.
If you find yourself getting a bad case of cabin fever take a ride to the book store and check out the encyclopedia for yourself. It is available at local bookstores and if you go to Barnes and Nobles or Books a Million they have a place where you can sit down a take a look to make sure it is the type of books you want to have in your collection. Ken also mentions that he knows there will be changes in technology and will be modifying and adding to this “Body of knowledge” is part of his plans for the future. To find out more about Ken Sch
