from a recent trip. Both my daughters, who have been landing sharks over 9’ on the beaches since they were in 4th grade, landed a couple more decent lemons. One is 8’6, the other is 8’.
Woe awesome fish, daughters must be proud as I am sure your a proud Popa.

9/0 to 16/0. Depends on my mood and what we are seeking. Have had huge sharks break 80 and 130 lines before. We are fishing for world records, hopefully:smiley:. The 16 is really heavy , but I bought it in 1984 and used it on the piers and beaches because of the line capacity. Surprisingly, i’ve seen guys spooled on the pier on 12’s and 14’s over the years by some huge critters. After losing a shark I fought on a 12/0 with 80 lb. braided dacron for 4.5 hrs on Garden City beach, I invested in the 16/0 and 130. We build our rods as well. I guess I’m just old school and stubborn, but I like the set up for bruisers on the beach. Not really interested in 6 footers any more. The girls fight all the sharks and have for the last 8-10 years. I do all the grunt work:smiley:
Way cool!..yea that’s a winch on that rod right there!

I wouldn’t talk about the guys kids like that …
oh, I think you mean winch!
yea, something like that lol take it how ya wanna i’m just saying you could pull a truck out the ruts w that thing

Believe it or not the old 16/0 were not made for drag or speed, simply line capacity. It wont move a big fish fast but it surely lets the fish tire out even if runs half a mile =P.

I hate (HATE) grammar nazis, so I promise this was only for comic relief:
Winch = motor to pull trucks
Wench = pirate ladies of ill repute
Just messin with ya!
So a wenches booty isn’t what we think it is huh[:I] I mean I think it is lol

Incredible fish, and epic chivalry letting your daughters do all the work!!
And agreed with mhebbard, I cringed when I read your post Stumpknocker, lol. I mean no offense whatsoever by it, an honest mistake lol.

Thier husbands better have some brass nads to keep up, that’s all I’ve got to say! One is on the rod and usually the other is trying to get into the water with me holdin the light on the shark while I’m roping the tail. It’s hilarious.

My brother has one of the old, old Ocean City 14/0’s. That’s a classic handed down to him by an old timer we used to shark with on Jennette’s pier in Nags Head, NC in the early 70’s. You know Walt Maxwell used a lefty 16/0 to land his big tigers in the 60’s. They are great reels and the drags last forever if you take care of em. I’ve seen a 16/0 get smoked by a big tiger.
The girls prefer Duskies, tigers and hammers to the lemons. Just not that much fight in them when compared to a big dusky or hammer. We just bought a Key West 20’ so our days of shore-sharkin will be limited now. Sad in some ways because of the many, many nights and fights in the surf, but I’m almost 49 and the years of lugging and trampling through the sand are wearin on me:stuck_out_tongue:. It will be nice to sit down and eat a sandwich while sharkin that doesn’t come with more “sand” than “wich”.
I agree with you there, this season we didn’t seem to find the big boys… Or just didn’t soak enough variety of baits and for long enough. All lemons and tippers. We still have maybe 6 weeks to go maybe well get lucky still

Over the years i’ve noticed some trends and commonalities in regards to fishing the beaches of SC. Back in the 70’ and 80’s before the commercial sharking wiped out huge stocks of them, big dusky sharks were very common catches for us, particularly in Sept/Oct… Sandbars filled the waters and were somewhat of a nuisance shark unless you had smaller gear, then it was on as they are very fast and strong fighters.
There is an abundance of medium to large lemons cruising the near shore waters. They are decent sharks and very good eating, but not the sporting beasts like big hammers and tigers. Unfortunately, their abundance makes the odds of them picking up your baits first pretty good. They are almost like flies. It seems that it’s luck more often now to hook a big bull or tiger.
