Has it occurred to anyone else that this is the golden age of college football in the state of South Carolina? The Gamecocks have finished 11-2 and in the top 10 in the last three seasons; Clemson has done both in the last two seasons. This from the flagship programs of a state best known in recent years for exporting its talent to national powers such as Florida State and Penn State. What Steve Spurrier and Dabo Swinney have achieved gets lost because they have one conference title between them in their present jobs. But the state of South Carolina stands behind only Alabama in recent success.
Always the bridesmaid, never the bride! I know I should be , and i am, very proud of how the Gamecocks have done in the last several years. But I’ve wanted a national championship since i was a kid and that feeling only grows over time. With spurrier getting older, losing shaw, clowney, quarles, etc in the same year i can’t help but worry we’re moving back in the other direction. Oh well, i’m just just belly achin’. The me who witnessed the 1999 season would be ashamed of me now.
That a state the size of SC can produce super high caliber football and baseball teams is phenomenal. While I would dearly love an SEC Championship and/or a National title, I have suffered through so many bad seasons that I am reveling in what we have now and enjoying every minute.

Amen, brother!! I have waited twenty-five years for this type of repeated success and I couldn’t be happier. I got so (**() tired of saying “wait till next year”. USC paid its dues early on for joining the SEC and now the benefits are paying off. Top caliber high school athletes know that the SEC is premier conference in the nation and this helps to keep home-grown talent in-state. Kudos to Clemson as well for success. It helps both schools to do well.]Originally posted by DFreedom

Spot on, Sir Quagmire. Good competition in this state in several sports…Good for the state! Can’t take anything away from Spurrier or Dabo…they’ve both done a great job for their programs.
I’m sure Dabo wants to turn the tide on the rivalry with USC and he’d probably like to forget that Fl State game, but his overall success at Clemson has been exceptional. Both teams get plenty of attention and respect from their opponents.
