What is the scoop on the old Bell Buoy place. I had heard the town bought it and then re-sold it? I heard the Bells got a chunk for it and got a new place in the mountains now - retired. I heard condo’s and once a landing? With the price I hear they got I would not expect it to grow weeds long.
The mayor and town council bought the property for $4,000,000.00 without doing the proper research. Since then they found out that they did not own the parking lot and,I think, the entrance to the property, the owner of which has since erected a fence. I think they have also spent about $25,000.00 on the Bell Bouy building which is about to cave in and is probably worthless. Big screw up by politicians that us property owners are paying for.

I’ve seen crazier things happen before, but (as a real estate attorney) I find it hard to believe that they closed on the purchase of that property without knowing exactly what they were getting. There’s just no way that the closing attorney did not go thoroughly through the title search prior to closing to determine exactly what was owned by whom and what access was granted, etc. That has to be done on every transaction, and the scrutiny on a closing where $4,000,000 is being spent is even higher.
The only thing I can think is that the city signed the contract to buy that property before determining what they were getting. I would HOPE that the city had their attorney determine this before signing a contract. Another reason I find it difficult to believe is that the seller would have had to disclose everything they owned, etc. beforehand, and a failure to properly represent what was being sold would be a pretty good way for the city to back out of the contract, once the discrepancy was discovered.
But, like I said, I’ve seen crazier things happen.
Just my two cents.
Just trying to learn every bit I can about saltwater fishing…
read the edisto beachcomber, which is the minutes of the council meetings and you will see many of the issues and problems w/ this property and what is being done. very interesting stuff. I don’t know enough about the particulars. I just hope we have intelligent people making intelligent decisions about this since the property has been purchased. I think there has been money spent on the dock but not the building itself. I also believe there is a DHEC issue to be resolved as well.
I just hope it will be used to benefit the people of Edisto.
I also heard that some of the people involved were trying to keep a fellow that I know from buying and developing the property. Regardless, there’s no way that they can do what they said they wanted to do with the property at this point. Did they not do their research or did they buy it knowing that they could not do what they had told the public? Which is worse?
Bell bouy is an extreamley screwed up situation. The thing about the parking lot is just the begining of it. There wasnt even an espestos (sp)check done until a couple weeks ago. Also there is no telling what the soil is like over by the rails. For years oil/desil was spilt/dumped, lead/copper based paints were spilt there and who knows what else. Thats going to have to be cleaned up eventually. Also I like how the town was planing on spending 20 ro 25 K on the dock to repair it then fence it off so no one could usse it. What would be wrong with knocking out the first 2 sections so it would be inpossible to acess the dock and spend the 20 to 25 K to fix it once the town knows what there going to do with the property. The only reason this stiuation hasnt gotten any worse is b/c our 2 newer councel members.
I agree re the 2 new council members. My understanding is that the person that owns the parking lot property, not the town, put up the fence.

That is correct. The man who owns that piece of land put the fence up b/c the town was planning on using his land with out asking permission or compensating him for it. So the person who owns the land put the fence up once the town cleaned up all of the junk in front of bell bouy
My God! 4 mil for that property and they can’t use it as originally planned.Something as simple as looking at a plat should have raised several red flags regarding access and parking.
Wow! Sounds like a cluster. Hope the town can work something out that is of benefit to the town. I doubt it. I had a guy tell me they hurried to buy it to keep casino boats operation out. That’s a lot of cash for a deal not checked out very well. Maybe the block was the goal no matter what? I guess they are happy? I figure the only ones happy now are the sellers.
No casino boat. They did the deal to keep a guy I know from developing the property. The casino boat thing sounds like a rumor the council may have started.

I would have much rather the guy from your home town (if were thinking of the same person) bought the land and devolped it. The town wouldnt be out of the Inital 4 Mill + what ever else is going to have to be sepent to salvage anything out of the property.
The town did get a grant for about half the cost so I think it was about 2 million. I do have some more thoughts in this matter but I do not know all of the facts. I just hope everything is remedied soon. Just like the Sunset Grille…there was a very bad odor coming from there over the fourth. I heard it was some rotten food in a cooler because the power was cut off last week. It smelled to me like something was dead up there.
I too would be interested in hearing about what is going with the Sunset grille and the Old Post Office. the Old Post Office always seemed to be busy when I drove by.
