Went into Haddrells Point West Ashley the other day, and they had just gotten a new load of nets in. I used to stick to Black Pearl nets although I knew Calusa was better. My decision was mostly because Calusa was MUCH more expensive. To my surprise, Haddrells is selling the Calusa nets for about the same price the Black Pearls have always been now. SO…
I got a new Calusa. I have had a big heavy one for menhadden for a couple years, but never really threw one for shrimp.
Maybe one day I will do a pictorial with all the differences in the net brands. They all have unique features that set them apart. A good net may look like a cheap one at some point to you, but if you throw a good one, you’ll never want to use anything else. Another good net I see in there are the less expensive nets Calusa makes called Crackers. They are heavier than a super pro, but they are easier to load up and throw. The lead line doesn’t get tangled as easily since it’s thicker/stiffer than the thin lead line Betts uses on their best super pro’s. I think the Crackers are cheaper than the Super Pro’s also. Sorry if I am upsetting anybody who likes Betts. I’ve used them all, and I think you’ll agree with me if you ever try a Calusa or Cracker net that they are much more enjoyable to use. Go look at them if your boat driver runs over your net this year, and you don’t have time to sew it up!
Also, bait binder is stacked up in Haddrells in the red buckets. Those 3 gallon buckets with lids are perfect for shrimping. Haven’t seen those buckets anywhere else in a long time.
Just wanted to post up since I see so many people asking about nets on here.
I was over there 2-3 weeks ago looking for a very specific net - they didnt have it, but they called the other store and got it over there right away.
As for pricing, it was cheaper than what I had found online when I was trying to decide what kind of net I wanted to get. (And even if it hadn’t been, I probably would have gotten it at HP for the service)
Hadrells could make a mint in Murrells Inlet. Maybe not quite as much on the shrimping stuff, but they could clean up on everything else. Its a wasteland.
I wouldn’t ever by a net at that store. FyI all net sales final, whether or not it is what you asked for. Better make (**()ed sure to take the very net you are being sold out back and throw it first. I got burnt last year
With rates so low, now may be the perfect time to refinance or purchase your dream home. If you are thinking about home financing give me a ring!</font id=“blue”>
I just ordered a Tim Wade 8’ Net made to my specifications for 1/2 the price of the Calusa and Black Beauty’s. From everybody that I talk to Tim’s nets are awesome. I’ll let you know how I like it when I get it in 3 more days!
We bought a 7’ Tim Wade last year. Only other experience I’ve had is a Betts Blue and the Super Pro. Tim’s net is easier for me to get ready to throw, and just all around easier. I assume it is because of the better quality components. My only concern was the horn is very large…It has a 1 1/2" opening. We simply took some fishing line and wove it in and out of the net webbing about 1/2" below the horn and reduced that opening. I’m extremely happy with it.

I love it when you get in the shrimp so heavy they are coming out of the horn…unfortunately I have not had that problem in a couple of years…
After 2 days back to back last weekend the Betts was shredded- it entered the danga zone of speed shrimping. With 2 coolers full I shouldn’t complain. What net will lay flat when you are getting ready? The Betts pillows out and I feel like I am handling a large mushroom. At the end of the weekend there were a ton of holes only at the bottom- we caught a cow skate, 3 horseshoe crabs and a zillon loose oyster shells at low tide-(the skate almost found a knife in its head- I was freaking out). Fixed it yesterday with fishing braid and crazy glue. I like to throw from a distance, find I get more if there not spooked. Advice on a net for a girl that can handle speed shrimping? (We do carry a back up net.)
Price vs. quality vs. ease of use IMHO is a Betts sea green. Its supple to lay flat, casts easily and price is reasonable. Your not going to crash your wallet buying it. Has enough weight to be used in moderate winds and sinks pretty fast. Only problem is, they are kind of hard to find. Mine was 8’ with half inch mesh. If I was going to buy another any time soon, I would go with 7’ with 5/8 inch mesh.
Have tried the super pro’s and the calusa. for the money, the sea green is the better.
Heather…I certainly do not believe you need advice on a net, just sayin…Prolly give us all a few pointers. But would you mind posting another map for me
Can’t my neck is still hurting from Tel…I actually had to look over my shoulder throwing this weekend in the Bay. He kinda gives me the creeps. I am going to give him a GPS location at the Real estate office he works at in MP to catch shrimp…nice marketing…wonderful FB page. Nice and Flashy.
