No, we did not troll, but I do have a few interesting notes for the shallow water trollers at the bottom.
Anyway, we decided to show Phin and Porpoiseone how easy it is to find big Red Snapper, so we set out on our quest. It was me, greg1, my father, and my fiance off to scout some new grounds. We let pops do some test drops with a circle hook. He’s never used them before and after setting a hook for 60+ years, it takes some getting used to. His first couple of battles ended up with line breaks (old line) and then finally he got rocked up. We employed the old shoot them some slack and snatch him out of the rock and he pulled up a nice grouper. We move to a different spot and he is fishing again. He had something half way off the bottom with the rod bent over double. Snap! Lost it again. He then instructed us to go down and kill it to get his hook back. I explained that it was likely a red snapper fighting so far off the bottom like that.
Greg and I ascend on the first dive and we are greeted by a pair of nice red snapper. I pop the first one that ended up going 18-8 on the digital scale and greg get’s the bigger one at 21-2. Nice fish that Phin would call a “red snapper slam with capital letters”. Then, I pop a couple of gag grouper that were both 16-18 lbs and greg get’s a nice gag and a hogfish. We floated up 100lbs of fish on a single dive. I miss a scamp at the very end as we run out of bottom time. Then as my lift bag is slowly rising. I see a small cuda get vertical and get on persuit of my bag. I think he got a stomach bite out of one of the groupers, but that is about it. We get to the boat and greg informs us that his big snapper indeed has dad’s bottom rig in his mouth complete with hook and sinker. “The big one that ALMOST got away”. I would have love to see dad pull that one up on R&R, but congrats to greg for a nice fish.
On dive #2, Rebecca went with us on an “Eco Dive”. She is still scared of sharks, so didn’t want us shooting. That is, until I handed her the gun and
That is great that you can dive down there and shoot them and all when they are line shy or you don’t have the skill to keep them out of the bottom when they bite. Let me know when you start catching those capital letter gags and snapper on hook and line…
Could midgie not even get a fish up with hook and line?
But nice job, seriously.
I tried to go offshore with my brother yesterday to show you a true snapper slam today on the internet, but the GPS antenna was gone and that handheld I had got sold at one of my yardsales.
I sat at the jetties watching it get calmer and calmer.
I should mention, Dad was the only one fishing. Greg and I never wet a line. We quit using hook and line a couple of years ago when we started diving, but here are a few reports when we did:
Like I said, the hardest part to catching red snapper is finding them. You might have read in your SWS about scaling down tackle and handy techniques, but if you aren’t on top of them you won’t catch any.
The first one includes Cracker on board in December, so that doesn’t count. I know Cracker is a bottom fishing mo-chine, and we all know how bottom fishing is in the colder months
On the last two,
without pictures…*…
I believe a hook and line fish-off is in order since you began the trash talking. MCMARINE said let him know when you want to deal with the Pioneer, a.k.a. grocery cart.

We have pictures from all trips. These reports were before CF.com allowed the posting of pictures.
Cracker was on my boat that day. He had a hand in snatching them up, but those were my #'s.
Check out the bottom fishing trip we did this past April. I think we got 17 grouper on R&R and only 1 grouper and 1 RS on spear.
Do you really know how bottom fishing is in the colder months? Please show me your reports in Charleston where you bagged them in the colder months? I want to see them. Those fish don’t exactly head to Bermuda in the summer. If they did, then we wouldn’t be killing them on the spear.
Hi. My name is Phin. I never fished before a day in my life until I made my first post on charleston fishing dot com last summer.
I have learned everything I know about offshore fishing from others on this site and the best fishing I have ever done has been posted here with pictures. Everything I say on here is usually made up or copied out of magazine articles, and I have not tried any of it myself.
Notwithstanding the above, I was out on the ocean pulling up snapper and grouper with electramates as early as I remember anything else in my life.
However, I have not been able to surpass those accomplishments on my own in spite of having GPS instead of Loran Charlie, 4 stroke outboard instead of an I-6 inboard hitting on 5 cylinders, a 1000W transducer with color screen instead of a paper graph (wait, which one’s better?), and Avets instead of Penns…
This automatically disqualifies me from even competing in the same league as you Skinnee. I don’t deserve so much attention as I clearly suck at fishing- as evidenced by a lack of bottom fishing reports on the internet.
What depth were all your snapper in yesterday?
We have been trying to find them in shallower than 100’ so the run is not as far, and this is why the report the other day mentioned finding snapper where the BSB have not overrun it. Back in the day, the summer # was 80’ and the winter # was 60’. You know?

Blah, Blah, Blah... Just post a report of you with a good catch in Charleston. PERIOD...
Oh, and did you catch those strawberry grouper in your quest to find snapper in < 100’?
Congatz. on the fish. I am honored that you would set out on a trip to porpoisely I mean purposely out fish us. Only, next time let’s fish apples to apples. From your own report you acknowledge your crews lack of skill in getting snapper, not even grouper off the bottom.

Yeah, we like to make fun of ourselves too. It’s all part of the game. If you can’t make fun of yourself, then who can you?

Unfortunately, on charters I can not go down and shoot snapper and grouper. Some how I do not think customers would enjoy that. Where I am from, it is not wise to be calling out charter captains, as they tend to be on the water alot and usually have good info to share.
You could always do scuba charters. I wasn’t really calling you out. I was just ribbing Phin a little for his post about “red snapper slam with capital letters”. You have to admit it was funny. Calling out charter captains? How much do you get out on the water? I could really blast you right now, but you seem like a nice guy so I will just stick to ribbing Phin a little. He seems to be a little less sensitive than you. Do you fish that much more than me? If so, you must hide the good reports. I didn’t see them on this website or on your own.

How long have you been bottom fishing?
I’ve been bottom fishing my entire life. I’ve only started doing it in my own boat for a few years. I’ve had the oppo
I went fishing with Skinnee last fall and did fairly well in about 4 drops to the bottom with rod and reel. Landed 2 grouper and broke two lines. I was done after that. I wanted to head back in but they made me stay out longer so they could do some diving
He took the bait like a jugbelly redfish on an olive and white clouser.
How about a bottom fishing tournement out of Chs? I would like to see a head to head of some of the local boys. I don’t think porpise1 would have a chance (I’ve seen the pictures)
The slam Snapper was caught on a Penn 4/0.
Can you believe that, bigeye tuna slayer?
J,
What brand spearguns shot the two in this report, and what kind of gear killed the snapper of old that you linked to?
And I hope the wasabi and kikkoman have been applied to yesterday’s catch by now…
Somebody asked about the strawberries in <100’. Yes, one came from right around 100’, and the other came out of 140’ if I remember correctly. We fished about 4 very dif. depths that day.

If seas are over 4’, then the monohulls get an automatic handicap. Nobody will be able to keep up with the catrageous or jason’s cat… whatever they are calling her now.
