The skinnee for 4-29-2009 (Dragon Slaying) PICS

Dolphin bite was red hot yesterday. Started out in about 1200’ pulling lines through acres of sardines. It looked like it was raining there was so much bait around us. Depthfinder said we were fishing in 40’ of water. After about an hour we ended up losing the bait as it was moving fast, but got 8 dolphins off of it in the meantime.

Pushed towards the south and found a decent weedline. It was covered in dolphins. We were pulling a z-man dredge yesterday with the holographic baits and it got raped by the dolphin fish all day long. At one point, it had 30 dolphins on it like pihrannas. We reeled it all the way up to the engines. The front of the dredge was actually out of the water and the fish were so fired up on it, I could see them trying to bite the tails off just next to the boat. Very cool sight.

Rolled past the weedline again and the ocean EXPLODED with action. We probably saw 40-50 10-20lb dolphins running away from the weedline for their lives. They looked like shrimp running from a trout. I’ve never seen dolphin so scared in my life. Something was trying to eat them.

By 11:30, the crew was so sick of catching dolphins, we took a vote.
a) Keep catching dolphins
b) Put out some plastics and try to catch whatever was chaisin them
c) Stop for some lobster ceviche on the way home.

They voted for “c”. On the way in, everyone was asleep except for yours truly. We were coming through 135’ of water and I could see a faint weedline off in the distance. I cut the wheel hard to go check it out. Huge hammerhead swimming against it. Blue green color change with nice weedline, wood, birds, etc. Heck, let’s try it for 30 minutes and maybe get us a wahoo. We only had 3 balleyhoo left thawed. 5 minutes into the troll, we get our first visitor, another 15# dolphin. No sweat.

5 minutes later, something grabs a flat line, but doesn’t know he is hooked. We see him jump. I start yelling “DOLPHIN! FORTY pounder! FORTY pounder!”. But it’s about that time, the 12’ long hammerhead see

Thanks for the report. Very nice job. what was the water temp in 135’?

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

Solid performance gents. No Skinnee tangles with the Cajun on board?? This whole work thing during the week really puts a damper on the fishing program…

George Carlin said it best, ‘Think of how stupid the average person is, and then realize that half of them are stupider than that’’.

Great report. Way to go guys!

Hey Skinnee J

Tell us more about the dive/lobster snatching. What depth? Clarity? Current? Pictures?

Thanks, Steve
