I have been a daily reader of the forum for the past year, but I just registered and this is my first post. I have learned a lot about fishing in the area from the forum. I live in Charlotte, and bought a lot on the Whale Branch River about 1 mile east of the highway 21 bridge. I hope to build a home in 2014. The developer of the six lots in my proposed neighborhood built a fabulous 700 ft. dock over the marsh to deep water. He installed a boat lift for me. I got a call this past weekend—someone stole the two motors off my boat lift! I have no idea if the crooks came by land or water, but they obviously had staked out the dock in advance—it was not a quick process to remove those motors. They are stainless steel Leeson motors, 1 HP, 10,000 lb lift. Keep your eyes open—if you see an old dock with new motors–or motors for sale in the Lowes parking lot, send me a message. I have called the Sheriff’s Dept, and I am calling Crime Stoppers and will post a reward. Thanks!

There was a lot with a singlewide trailer on it for sale for quite some time right there on 21. Is that what you bought? Looks like a real nice place to build.

It really sucks to hear about thieves. Especially in your case with trying to do a great thing like you’re doing.
I don’t know if it’s just me, but I’ve heard a lot more about robbers in the beaufort area in the last few months.
Could be a sign of the times. People are getting desperate. I’m not sure how you’ll be able to secure your new motors
but be creative. Welding? Good luck with your construction.

Sorry to tell you, but you bought your lot in not the best and safest area in northern Beaufort county.
Probably easy for the thieves to see there was no house associated with the dock. And, that part of the river does get a fair amount of traffic, unlike some little creek.

I knew that buying a lot in an undeveloped area in northern Beaufort County would be a risk/reward type situation. I looked at real estate all over the County, and the northern part offered large lots (2.5 acres)on beautiful water in a quiet area at a good price. I had concerns that someone would tamper with my boat if I left it unattended on the lift in an undeveloped neighborhood (and I don’t), but it did not cross my mind that someone would steal the motors off the lift. As NN said in his post, I hate a thief!
When you replace them don’t put in a switch that can be turned off out side of a lock box, moat people wont mess with them with live power on them! Try installing a game camera, I’ve had good luck catching theafs using one!
Dang that sucks. I’ve got some good friends that live on Whale Branch so I’ll pass the word.
