It’s just a guess. I won’t even try to back it up with any stats b/c I don’t have the time to look it up. I would guess though that if you poled the capts out there, they would say that they caught more/bigger fish 30 years ago than they do today (obviously there are a lot of factors like the number of boats fishing, etc but you get my idea). And when I say ‘rare’, I don’t mean endangered, I just mean that some capts feel fortunate just to see a fish in the spread, let alone actually hooking up.
I think the same could be said for sword long liners. That actually has been proven by statistics.
This mentality is exactly what the enviros are looking for. Just because its tough to get a marlin in the spread is absolutely NO indication that the fish are “rare”, but is more likely that the fish are difficult to fool. You say you don’t have “time to look up stats” yet you state that it has “actually been proven by statistics”. Instead of replying quickly to cover your ass, take the time to show us the stats. Put up or shut up. In poker this is refered to as a “call” .

Don’t get your panties in a wad there sparky. Again, I’m not the enemy, I’m a fisherman. I keep fish. I love to eat fish. But, I also dont believe that just because you c
You have plenty of time to spout bull****! Why don’t you take the time learn the facts you try to speak of. The sword scare was totaly a ruse by the enviros. There are NO surveys or data to find to justify your “feeling”. Take the time to learn before you step on everybodys toes. I believe that if a fisherman catches legal fish - within all legal limits, it is none of yours or anyones business if he releases or eats his catch.
BTW I AM an old salt. I used to run head boats. Hold a 100 ton Master. Know what that is?. Try to find a head boat today.
now hold on a sec. i have yet to hook a sword, doesn’t that mean there aren’t any???

You’re the one letting your toes get stepped on. Try some decaf perhaps. It’s not like I came on here waving the PETA flag and saying you shouldn’t keep fish. All I asked is whether most of the fish is used and plenty of people confirmed that it is. Also, I never said anything about not keeping or eating your catch. If it’s done legally, knock yourself out. Trust me, I’ve kept/eaten plenty of fish.
But since you asked, is it difficult to find a head boat today? We used to fish off one in NJ a long, long time ago when I was little kid.
Bone–very few billfish get kept out of Charleston, and I promise very little dolphin, wahoo, & tuna get wasted. We are a coastal town and all of our neighbors, friends, coworkers, and whoever else can get their hands on it enjoy fresh fish.
I like to vacuum seal so I have a ready supply to eat throughout the year, although I know many on this site eat & distribute fresh fish only.
KSA Marine Insurance
Edited for misspelling.
quote:Thanks Bread, I think some people on here got the wrong impression, that I was advocating not keeping fish or implying that a lot of fish are kept but wasted. I know that as good stewards of a resource, as most fishermen are, that they have a vested interest in sustaining healthy, productive fish populations.

Natureboy use to use a compass and an AM radio to find his way back to Charleston! This was before Loran A! So I think that qualifies as an old salt!

NMFS = No More Fishing Season
“Back home we got a taxidermy man. He gonna have a heart attack when he see what I brung him”
When I think back on those days - its a wonder we ever caught a fish! Used WTMA (1250 AM) on an old RF direction finder and would run a compass course for a set period of time. Only then we would turn on the depth sounder because the paper cost $5 per roll… Sometimes I just let them fish at drift and threw in a marker to come back to when we caught a few b-liners. Back then we knew exactly what the lighthouses should bear on the compass…so we could find the jetties.
My pants arent in a wad, and I am not over caffenated. However, I do understand how fishery law has evolved into the disaster we have today, and uninformed guesses & feelings are a big part of the problem we are dealing with today. What is sad is when someone comes on a public forum and expresses complete bull and dosent care enough about the fishery to take the time to learn what is fact or fiction. This forum can be very unpleasant for the un-informed that expose their ignorance publicly.
It is common sense and a change in mentally really. Sometimes we as fishermen do need to turn back some fish. I am personally done with keeping Gags over 20 lbs…It’s grouper jerky. Think of how many babies that fish can spawn. We can all be guilty at times of putting more over the side than common sense dictates. I am not casting stones as I have done it plenty. It is however food for thought going into another season. I love to fish, and be on the water. The dollars for me are more than just the bags of fish I can fill up. I don’t begrudge anyone for keeping their limit, though on our boat I don’t allow the 60 dolphin max,. Just one man’s thoughts.

It just depends on whose agenda the study was funded and supports as to the conclusions. It's like which side of the political spectrum you fall. The 'facts' can support either side depending on your agenda. And if you think I care whether someone on an anonymous internet chat forum agrees or disagrees and it can be 'unpleasant', well, sorry to disappoint you but I've got 'much bigger fish to fry' (pun intended).
