Hey Ant,

Chunk mullet under large Carolina rig or fish finder rig. On Folly Pier. The bull reds follow the mullet run pretty consistently every fall.

experience noun \ik-#712;spir–#601;n(t)s

  1. the fact or state of having been affected by or gained knowledge through direct observation or participation

  2. that thing you get just moments after you needed it.

Those are fantastic fish
Do y’all use braid or mono?

if you are on the pier it makes no difference as you are unlikely to be spooled on anything over say a 4000 size reel. i would say if you got 200yds of 15lb or its equivalent you are fine. i personally like a tightish drag setting and mono for the big fish finder rigs since i always have a circle hook (mustad demon circle personal fav) I think the stretch allows the whole rig to load and gives the fish time to get the bait down before the hook turns and catches.

KOP just out of curiosity how far out on the pier have most of the reds been coming lately the end or around half way?

Thanks hurricane. I caught a nice one out there a few weeks back using that method. I blamed a little bit of it on luck but I guess I was doing alright. I just see kop catching monsters consistently and figured I cold learns thing or two from him

Wonder what the survival rate is on those breeder hosses???
Seems to be plenty of them around…Really looks like fun…Dont see how they keep from tangling lines…Three caught at the same time is AMAZING!! How do you raise such huge fish from the water to pier???

Might ride down there and do some pier fishing soon…Hope not to see anything illegal…Maybe it is legal to kill reds caught on piers…can you keep them when caught from piers?? I know ou do not need a fishing license…But is this ok??

here we go again…

Tony, you are wasting your breath and time…

I do not know the laws on piers…I do know that a licensed pier does not require you to have a fishing license…Personally I have no problem with pier fishermen or what they keep…Curious if the same laws limits apply on these piers…

I guess i could call the piers and ask the owners.

I would love to come down and see those hosses being caught!!Maybe it sounds dumb but how do you get them up to the pier??

I can not imagine catching fish like those with all the rods I see there…No tangled messes??

Use Pm for personal stuff please.

REALLY toppyblue??? You think we are catching these Reds and killing them??? And you want to come down and see how it’s done??? Yep, we post all these pictures so we can get caught doing illegal things. Ya, come on down…

Toppy: the slots for reds is something like 18-23 inches. All of these are waaaay oversize. They are brought up to the pier using dropnets and after taking pictures we put them back into the drop net and drop them back into the water and let them get their energy back up and they swim out of the net. I would say the survival rate is near 99%. I’ve never seen one not swim off because we get them back into the water quickly.

Thanks for the info!!!Sounds like fun! How often do you guys tangle up with the other rods fishing??Or does everyone kinda work together?

Quite often. That’s why you hardly see me fishing Friday or Saturday nights. You try to stay with the fish and weave over and under lines but sometimes it doesn’t work as planned.

The reason I fish the pier is meeting all the good friends.fishing the pier is a challenge.

There is so much bad information on this thread, I’m not sure where to start…

  1. There is no law saying you cannot take a picture with an overslot fish and return it to the water. These gentlemen in the pictures are not breaking any law.

  2. SCDNR regulations apply to everyone. The slot size for redfish is 15"-23" no matter if you catch it from land or a pier or a boat with a goat on a rope or a left handed fishing rod. Doesn’t matter.

  3. Different piers have different rules. Some require the angler to have a SC fishing license. Some have that included in their daily charge.

  4. For someone who spent “days” researching oyster barons online, you would think that you would have at least glanced over the SC Fishing Regulations. To imply that someone is doing something illegal with no proof is ignorant of SC Law and disrespectful to the anglers involved who are rightly proud of their catches.

right on!

I’m coming back out tomorrow or Wednesday.
