This Years Turnover

Might also depend on where you are. On Hartwell where I used to fish more, the turnover started up the lake and worked its way to the (**() and could sometimes take a couple weeks. The water in one area would look awful- black, murky, etc. then you run 5 miles down the lake and the water would be pretty green and clear.

No turnover yet. The fish and bait balls were right where I left them last Sunday. Yes. I caught some on spoons, though the action was a bit slower than last week. The 2 23 inchers were the only legit keepers come Tuesday. I was bumping bottom in 50 feet with the big Berry Spoons from 12:30 to 3:45 this afternoon.

Well if you had scooted across the lake about 3:30ish then you would have been on nonstop topwater … We left them on top at 5:30 … because …well, because we had to … I only wish they would school on top like that in the AM -sure would make the kids jobs a whole lot easier next Saturday … Lol

it’s my Wife’s fault we HAVE to fish now!!!

So based on the bottom DO readings since Sunday, has lake started to turnover?

Based on the odor of the lake last night I would say that it already has … Gee THANKS, Tim … every time you schedule a tournament you turn the lake over the week before the tourny …

I havent really paid to much attention in the past during yhe turnover but wouldnt the DO up top fall? Recent data shows the top rising as well as the bottom…

I’m sorry … we were driving by and noticed the smell … it was REALLY bad …

My Wife is on the water right now … she said they are still schooling, but not like they were last Sunday … however, she’s got three on the boat right now …

and DON’T even say it … I know I know … WTH!!! am I doing at the office while my WIFE is catching fish … I have a 2 day trial next week that I’m prepping for so I’m STUCK at the office while she is off having fun …

But it’s all good … she’ll give me good intel for the tourney on Sat … and since she works on SATURDAYS I will be fishing the tourney with the kids WHILE SHE’S AT WORK …

Oh yea … and since I have the crappiest fishfinder ever (I swear, divining rods would do better but for all the water interference) I couldn’t tell you anything reliable with regard to “marking” fish … sorry

So did the lake turnover? I looked on the USGS waterdata website and saw some interesting numbers between the 7th and 8th but I don’t think that is the flip- but maybe it is. I was going to try and figure out this lake turnover thing this year so if anyone can point me at the right day(s) to look at (assuming it has turned over) I would appreciate it.

This year is very different from other years because of all the rain. I believe what happened is the cooler water was sucked out from the bottom and replaced by all of the warm summer rain water. The “bottom” temperatures were higher than I have seen bottom temperatures and the O2 levels where flat linned for a month. The surface did not have to cool as much to get cooler/denser than the water on the bottom. So the turnover happened a lot earlier. I have been wondering if there is cooler water down below the “bottom” sensors that could trigger a second turnover.

steelytom: That’s a good question considering the placement of the sensor (guess they couldn’t afford the extra cable to put it all the way on the bottom ). TWO turnovers in one year gives me twice the chance to figure this thing out.
So for this “odd year turnover” that apparently already happened, can you point me to a day or two where I can look at the graphs to wrap my head around it?

I think it was week of sept 29-oct 5th. May have been a week later but it was around that time. But like tom said the temps were so far off than they normally are that u can pretty much take this yr’s info and throw it in the garbage. We probably wont have a TO like this one for a long time ha…from the reports during that time it really didnt even bother the fish this time around like it usually does.

OK- I’ll save my heavy thinking for next year then. Glad it didn’t affect the fishing too much.

Last years was very easy to spot, we had a high wind cold front that made it a dramatic flip.

This is this years O2 on the bottom, you can see the turnover around the 28th

Thanks Tom. Looking at the temp charts for the week of the 28th I can see what you are saying - nothing that really jumps out at you. If it wasn’t for the DO blip and the reported smell around the 28th it might have gone completely unnoticed.

Tom, I think you are correct and that there is a good possibility of a 2nd turnover this year, especially with the lake drawdown coming up. 2014 can’t get here soon enough for me and the lake gets back to “normal” as 2013 has trashed most of our efforts since April.

Even if there is a second turnover the majority of the fish have started to migrate west and I believe will not be affected. We are already catching fish in less than 10’ of water. It seems the fish are affected by a turnover the most when the majority of the fish catching is taking place below the big gap…my .02
